I cant figure out how to set up automatic payments for my new BMO credit card. I also have a new BMO bank account and i still cant find a way to do this. I have found video tutorials from BMO from 2020/21 and the app/website just doesnt look the same anymore or have the same options. There is simply no way to do it for me. What am i missing???? As a part of my welcome bonus for the new bank account i need to set this up and have it automatically pay before april, or i lose the 350$. Quite frustrating.

Are there delays in payment?

Do you add the card as a payee?

Could I have a chequing account with TD for example and a credit card with Scotia?

Other things to consider?

Yes, you normally can add the card as a bill payee. And it will usually take two or three business days for the bill payment, just like most other online bill payments. And yes, you can have a credit card from a different bank than you bank at. Many people do this.

Are there delays in payment? Yes. 2-3 business days. Do you add the card as a payee? Yes, you do it once when you first get the card, using your credit card number as the account number. When you add the card as a payee I believe there are instructions (not sure though, I did this several years ago). Could I have a chequing account with TD for example and a credit card with Scotia? Yes, I do this now. I bank at TD and have a Visa there, but I also have a Mastercard from BMO. Other things to consider? You are not able to set up automatic payments for the card's monthly balance. I bank at TD and my primary credit card is there as well, so it's easy to set it up to automatically pay the balance of the card because it's all under the same roof. My BMO Mastercard is a secondary/backup card. I've found the odd place that doesn't accept visa but does take mastercard (pretty rare now), and I use the mastercard for online purchases. I have to make the mastercard payment manually each month (I automate this kind of thing as much as possible). The main thing is that you have to make sure you're on top of the payment dates since you have to manually pay each one, and be sure to do it at least a few days in advance so the payment has time to go through.

r/PersonalFinanceCanada on Reddit: A few questions regarding my new BMO credit card.
November 12, 2017 -

Hey! I just got my first ever credit card, and it was the BMO SPC MasterCard. I recently activated it and was looking up some guides on dos and don’ts. I still have a few questions though so if you guys could me out, then that’ll be great.

Okay. So I found out that I only have a MasterCard account (I don’t have a chequing account) so I’m not able to make any payments or Interac-e-transfers online, nor in the app. I was wondering how do I pay my credit card bills then (specifically the monthly statement)? Do I have to set-up a bank account or is there any other way?

Secondly, I was wondering how do I receive credit card monthly statements? E-mail or Mail, for example? I’m trying to find out how long are usual interest-free grace periods are?

Those are the questions I was hoping if you could answer me. Thank you!

You will need a chequing account unless you're going to go into BMO branches to pay your credit card in cash, but not necessarily a BMO account, you can pay from most banks by adding BMO MasterCard as a payee. Not a question you asked, but please ensure that you are only using your credit card to spend money they you already have. Not money you expect to have, or hope to have, but money that you have now in your bank account. Otherwise you could get into an unhealthy cycle of spending future income, rather than spending past income.

I have this exact same credit card so I hope I can help. When it comes to paying your bill the easiest thing to do is to pay it through a bank account, to do this go into your bank and ask to pay a BMO Mastercard with the account number for the bill being your credit card number. If you prefer doing banking online (as many people do) just log into your online banking and go to add payee and just add BMO Mastercard with the account number being your credit card number. If you do not have a bank account, you can sign up for free accounts with online banks like Simplii Financial , Tangerine , or Alterna Bank , I'd recommend Alterna Bank if you send few interact e-transfers (you get 2 free) or Simplii if you send a lot (unlimited free e-transfers). As for statements, by default you receive them by mail to the address you used to sign up for the card with. If you would like e-statments you must create an online banking account at bmo.com using your credit card number and under statement options select e-statments. You can also set up email and phone alerts for when you sign up for online banking. Your interest rate for the card is 19.99% for purchases and 22.99% + $5 fee for cash advances. When it comes to interest, you are only charged interest on purchases after 21 days from the date your statement was generated (this is usually month end, for example my statement generates on the 6th of every month). So when you receive your statement, PAY IT IN FULL as soon as you get it, if that's not possible at least pay the minimum balance which is listed on the statement so your account isn't sent to collections and so your interest rate won't go up. As for cash advances (which is using your credit card at casinos, stores that ONLY sell lottery tickets, or taking money out of an atm with your mastercard, there is no interest free period you earn interest immediately. So if you're doing that pay your card balance asap to prevent fees. If you have anymore questions (like questions about the cash back) feel free to contact me :)
