How to pronounce the Swedish 'i'/'y' sound?
Warning: I am a fellow learner of Swedish (I moved to Sweden a little over two months ago) so I may not be right, but this was something I struggled with a lot until I moved here. The thing with that sound is that it's very specific to the Stockholm area, and even there, not everyone pronounces it that way. So you should be able to safely ignore it in your own speech, and pronounce i similar to English ee without sounding foreign. More on reddit.com

Can you really choose to pronounce "ll" and "y" sound in spanish like the "j" and "y" sound in english? I always remember being told that the two pronunciations are interchangeable. Would it sound unnatural if someone ONLY used one of the pronunciations?

It depends on where you’re from. In some countries, like Mexico, you’ll hear the “y” pronunciation, so llevar will sound like yevar while in other countries, like Colombia, you’ll hear llevar pronounced like jevar. It’s a regional difference, basically. In Argentina it’s even more of a “sh” sound, so llevar sounds like shevar. It all just depends on the country/region.

In many cases where there are multiple variant pronunciations only the first, most common variant is offered in audio format. This happens when part of the compound is already pronounced elsewhere in the dictionary. For example, at the "Grand Teton" entry "Grand" is not pronounced because it is already pronounced at the "grand" entry; "Teton" is pronounced, however, because there is no entry or pronunciation for "Teton" by itself.

June 14, 2007 - Panjandrum, that is really interesting...no, I think that's the way people in the midwest pronounce it. I have a blog, and in an audio blog entry that I recently posted, people thought that my using the "aw" to pronounce the word "audio" was indicative of a New York City accent.
