I'm almost sure this question won't have a solution but I'll give it a shot. Is there a phonetic pattern or a way I can figure out how to pronounce foreign names in a more English way?I usually don't have any issues with spelling-pronunciation logic and can read unknown words correctly 9.9/10 times, but names really throw me off! I notice it's a somewhat common practice to ask about the pronunciation of someone's name in the US. Are native speakers just as confused about them?

Wish more people did this! There will be the rare occasion where the Google results pronunciation varies from how they say their name in their voicemail greeting. Regardless, it's something I jot down in the CRM for the next rep to know

Hi all, I hope this is the right forum to ask this question in. I met someone the other day and her name is written as Huizi. I asked her a few times how to pronounce it and am really struggling. Usually I’m pretty good with remembering name pronunciation but for some reason this one didn’t stick and I feel too awkward to ask her again. Any chance someone could help me out with the correct pronunciation? Is it something like “hwee-tzuh?”
Thanks so much for any help you can offer!
So I like to look into my ancestry every so often and have a woman within my family named Heletje. I was curious if anyone knows the origin of it and how to pronounce it as I can’t find anything on it.
I (17F) live in England, but I'm from Asia and my first name is fairly common in my home country but not here. Technically the name exists in Europe too, but it has a very different pronunciation and sometimes spelling. I always accept whatever pronunciation people go for in England since it's just easier, especially for my last name.
I was chatting with some classmates before a school event-- I didn't really know them well, but it was a decent conversation. My name was printed incorrectly on the programme and I pointed it out with a joke.
Immediately one of the girls asked how to pronounce my first and last name. I say 'the English pronunciation is x' and she and her friend say 'no, how do you say it at home?' and I almost teared up since I realised I'd never been asked that before. I taught them and yeah it was just a really nice moment I wanted to share!
