r/Home on Reddit: Restoring antique wood
September 3, 2023 -
Wondering if you all had any tips on restoring antique wood furniture. I recently acquired an old singer sewing machine table and it's a dark cherry wood with the sewing machine inside. It's dingy and gross and I don't want to mess it up. What should I clean it with and so on. Thank for any help!

Are you doing a restoration or do you just want it to look nice? The easiest way to achieve basic good looks out of dingy old wood furniture is with a finish restoration product like this one. It basically just smooths out the surface of the existing finish and is no substitute for a restoration, but for a wipe-it-on-and-see product it works wonders. Cleans off the gunk, fills the scratches, makes it basically nice with very little work.

June 28, 2021 - The biggest mistake when applying furniture wax, is applying too much at once, as this will make it difficult to buff up and if not buffed up correctly it will act as a dust collector leaving your finish dull. The correct way to apply antique furniture wax is to use a soft, clean cotton or lint free cloth and apply the furniture wax by dipping the cloth into the can of wax and rub the wax on in a small circular motion over the entire wood surface sparingly.

October 18, 2017 - There are lots of ways to refinish. People use stains, shellacs, varnishes, lacquers, waxes, oils... it's a little overwhelming. Searching online gives you a lot of people that swear their way is the only right way. But after a lot of searching, and some conversations with my grandpa, I think I have a decent handle on what's what. In this instructable, I'll be using clear finish only. I'm not coloring the wood at all (with stains or oils).

March 3, 2021 - Stripping furniture is messy, but key to wood restoration, so work outside if possible. If working indoors, protect the floors and any furniture nearby and ensure good ventilation.
