r/Renovations on Reddit: How to restore old varnished wood?
May 4, 2023 -

I'm renovating an entire house. All the door frames, windows, and skirting boards are Jarrah with some ancient stain or lacquer which is now so degraded it looks like matte brown paint. My question is, how can I brighten all this trim up? I don't have time (or the fortitude right now) to strip it all and refinish. Is there a stop gap I can use just to at least make it brighter and bring back some of the natural wood grain? Thanks!

Revive, not refinish - Canadian Woodworking
January 1, 2025 - Locate an area to work in that is well ventilated and well lit, then place a plastic drop cloth down and turn the piece over there onto its back. Select a small, 2″ square area that’s as inconspicuous as possible and clean that area with a rag lightly soaked in turpentine. Now that it’s clean, take a good look at the test area. If you can see open pores of wood under the finish and the finish is not glossy, odds are that an oil and wax finish has been applied.

How do you rejuvenate wood furniture?
The first step is to clean it with lemon-oil or orange cleaner, like Murphy's Oil Soap. Avoid using furniture polish – it is not effective enough. Let the cleaner sit on your furniture for 10-15 minutes before removing. Then make an oil and vinegar mix of 3 parts oil to 1 part vinegar and rub it on your furniture. To take out scratches, open a walnut and rub the meat on your furniture on any dings you find. It should look almost new after these treatments.

r/woodworking on Reddit: Help! Accidental Varnish Damage on Friend's Wood Table - Need Urgent Fix
July 31, 2023 -

I'm in a bit of a predicament and desperately need your advice. My friends in Paris generously let us stay in their apartment while they're away on vacation. Unfortunately, there was a mishap with a nail polish spill on their beautiful wooden table, and my attempt to remove it ended up damaging the varnish quite badly. Now, I'm left with just about 3 days to fix this before they return.

While I admire woodworking, my skills are pretty much non-existent (I did dabble a bit during art school), so I could really use some guidance here. My initial thought was to use n000 metal wool and varnish, but I'm not entirely sure about the process.

I would truly appreciate any suggestions or tips you may have to help me rectify this situation and restore the table to its former glory. Thank you in advance for your expertise and guidance!

Cheers,
