I went to a makerspace for the first time to sand a painted (I think it's varnish, apparently) nightstand I wanted to refinish. An old guy there told me I would be better off stripping it: "just mix some white vinegar & lemon juice and it'll come right off."
I've been trying to look this up but can't find much, let alone any potential proportions or anything. Does anyone do this?

Hi - an old method is to use cut glass. Scrap glass scribed and snapped cleanly has a very sharp edge. You shave the varnish off leaving a good wood surface. No chemicals, no burning, cheap and surprisingly fast once you get the technique. Obviously use the appropriate PPE while doing this. A dust mask is recommended as well as eye and hand protection. Hope that helps.
