I have a cheap but comfortable office chair, and its starting to show its age as the cushion is getting compressed or thinner. I live in an apartment and don't have a lot of tools, but I am thinking of replacing the cushion part and had some questions.
Would I need an electric staple gun, or would a manual one be better since it would only see seldom use? Is this even needed?
Is there some grade or rating or type of cushion/foam I should look out for to have a high quality, king-like sitting experience? Is there a good place to source such a thing?
The material of the cushion cover is faux/vegan leather and seems to not have any wear on top. Is the seat cover usually reusable or do I need to look for something else?
Is there another consumable part I need to look for besides these items (cushion/foam, staples/stapler, seat cover fabric) ?
Any advice is appreciated, and I hope to reduce the waste of throwing away a perfectly good frame of a chair due to a cushion that could be replaced with some know how and minor labor. Admittedly I am not that handy but would rather build skills and reduce waste over my lifetime than thrown perfectly good stuff away.

I recovered my dining chairs a couple years ago, so this is based off of that! I used a manual stapler. I got 3” high density foam, which seems like overkill, but I wanted a little extra height and to have support. You’ll want to get batting as well (the stuff used in quilts) to put between the foam and fabric - it rounds off your edges and gives a nicer look and feel. I’d plan on getting new fabric and getting more than you think you need. If you want to seal the bottom, you’ll need fabric for that, too, but that’s optional. I just went online for the foam, but I remember I bought a ton of it - I made a cushion for my hall bench, too. Good luck! 💜

Just finished an wingback chair, a manual stapler is fine as that is what I used but an electric one is worth it if it fits your budget. A good pair of scissor, the stapler, a meter measuring tape and a hammer oh chalk and spray glue, is all you need to re upholster everything. Thread comes in upholster strength Material choice can be whatever- just ask yourself how many times you want to re do the work. Generally closed cell high density foam for a durable long lasting loaf. Top that foam with low density foam or thick coarse batting (quality, quilt batting is ok for loft) Edit: use the old material as a pattern for the new if you choose new fabric. Leave 2 -3 inch on the edge to give you something to hold while tugging the cushion firm. Trim as you go/need while installing. . Edit: arrow jt21 staples and compatible stapler or comparable.
