How to Sew a Cushion with Piping - A Well Purposed Woman
May 17, 2021 - You can make piping on the bias, or by cutting the fabric straight which is probably the most straightforward. But the method I used for this chair was to cut the piping at a 60 degree angle.

Piping or no piping? I’m going to recover these cushions with a new cream fabric and I can’t decide if I should use piping or not. Any input?
My parents’ MC sofa had no piping (way back when), so I went with none in a similar situation. More on reddit.com

Reupholstering old recliner with piping

Piping is purely decorative (imo) and fairly old-school.. One could argue leaving the piping off could make it look more modern. Maybe a nice top stitch on the border depending on the material choice?

Good luck! Looks like a fun project!

Advice on making my first ever piped box cushion, please - MyDecozo
I'm looking for advice on making a piped box cushion, please. I've never done one before, so I've borrowed a couple of books from the library (by Heather Luke and Maureen Whitemore), searched this forum for information and looked at some YouTube tutorials. This research process has left me with some questions, so I hope I can pick your expert brains, please. The project is to make a cushion for a small chair... More on mydecozo.co.uk

Is it possible to remove piping?
It's sewn in between the seams, generally 2" of fabric wrapped around the actual piping, which is either cotton or plastic, you can take it out but then you have to re sew the job. You can try just splitting the fabric wrapping the piping & taking the piping out, but it's fiddly, can easily go wrong if you slip & will look pretty messy afterwards More on reddit.com

February 3, 2015 - Align the strip to the seat cushion to get a good continuation of the pattern taking care that the strip joints are in inconspicuous places. For ex. you wouldn’t want to see a seam right in the middle of the cushion. Use the below pic only as a reference. I ran out of fabric and had to use whatever piece I had left over aka.

January 29, 2013 - I just finished a home décor project for my aunt that involved more hand tools than sewing. September 4, 2025 - Be sure and cut straight, especially if your fabric has a pattern. Leave about 3 inches all the way around, for stapling. A standard size dining chair will typically need a 27″ square of fabric. 3/4 yard should cover two seats. Here are some reupholstery tips from Jen and Jack:

February 19, 2018 -

Hey all!

I'm fairly new to this sort of thing, however I will try to keep it simple and I welcome all helpful responses as I know you're all the experts on this.

I have an old wooden reclining chair (like this one) that has two cushions as well as an ottoman with an additional cushion. The chair and the cushion pattern is a bit dated, and I'd like to reupholster the chair and possibly refinish the wood. It's all in great condition, just not in great style.

My problem is that these cushions have piping. I am wondering if when I reupholster, is it necessary to add new piping, or can the job be done without? If so, how would that affect the cushions?

Thanks in advance for any and all help!

February 12, 2011 - Any time there are curves involved, you need the bias cut fabric so there is enough "give" to navigate curves. I also think bias binding covers the cording nicer. If your cushions are square or rectangluar, you might get away with straight cut fabric binding, but I always find I am happier with bias binding.
