Planning to spray newly built cabinet doors with SW emerald urethane. I sprayed a vanity previously with BM Advance and it didn’t come out great. Wondering if it had something to do with spray technique or setup.
Sprayed with a FFLP 210 out of a Grace X7. The knob was at the lowest setting and it was putting out what I would consider a good fan. Not the best sprayer but it’s what I have.
Problem is the finish is not great, it’s okay, but not glassy smooth. Wondering what can be done differently on kitchen cabinets to get a higher quality finish.
Second question is about spraying in a garage with a radiant heater. I know the heater heats objects and not the air so will I run into issues letting the doors dry in there?

I personally don’t run FFLP tips on anything lower than full pressure. The atomization is so much better at full blast. It will give you that glass finish if you lay it properly. Not too light, not too heavy. if you read the can of emerald urethane, it will not recommend you put it through anything smaller than a .13 orifice ,I believe. Also, in my personal opinion, a 210 is too small of a fan. You will have to make more overlaps and that leaves more room for buildup and error. For doors, I use a 410.

As for the dry time, I really don’t think the heater is going to help you much.

How to get a smoother finish? Spraying SW Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel using HVLP
Try thinning the paint so it flows better. Water based paints are incredibly thick to be able to atomize through an hvlp gun. I always thin to a 6 second drip - that means it stops dripping off the stir stick after 6 seconds. And I've had no issues with water based paints not leveling out or drying properly by thinning them. With an hvlp gun, you're also applying the paint in much thinner coats than with an airless. I am about to spray paint my kitchen cabinets that I am building. I did a test piece, which turned out okay. But from what I understand I should be able to get an even smoother finish, since I am using a spray gun and a nice paint like Sherwin Williams EUTE. Do y'all have any advice for how I can improve the finish?
Details of my process:
Substrate = birch plywood, sanded to 220 grit
HVLP sprayer = Super Finish Max HVLP Sprayer using a 2.0 mm tip
Primed with one coat of SW Wall & Wood Primer
Sanded after priming w/ 600 grit sandpaper (might be too high? - it's what I had on hand)
Sprayed first coat of Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel paint in semi-gloss
Next day I lightly sanded and applied a second coat of paint
Each coat dried with the test piece laying down, to give it the best chance of leveling out.
50% overlap when spraying
I suspect I might have applied it too thinly. I read a post of this sub about someone applying EUTE too thickly, which resulted in the paint failing to fully cure, even months later. One of the comments said that darker colors take longer to cure, as well. For those reasons I was a bit afraid of putting it on too thick, and I used a smaller 2.0 mm tip (I have 1.4, 2.0, and 4.0 mm tips). Does it look like I sprayed too thinly, or is there some other cause?
Any recommendations on how to get a smoother finish are greatly appreciated.

Try thinning the paint so it flows better. Water based paints are incredibly thick to be able to atomize through an hvlp gun. 1.5 is correct. You will need a 5 stage turbine, and thin no more than 10% with retarder (or water). Your current tip is too big, and too much paint. Turn air up all the way. Turn fluid down to about half way or less. Test on cardboard. Make adjustments. Look for fine atomization along the edges of your spray pattern.
