You can press ctrl-c which sends SIGINT signal that immediately interrupts your program and stops it ( Unless you have a custom handler for this signal ;) )

Hello! Just started learning python and got introduced to what infinite loops are! I typed up some stuff to make an infinite loop and tried to do ctrl+C to kill it in the vs code terminal but it wouldn't work. I tried cmd+C too (I have a Mac) and that code kept going... Would love help and direction in what I'm doing wrong + how to stop an infinite loop!

Using the VSCode terminal, sometimes when I try CTRL + C just once, it does nothing. If I try it again, it does nothing, BUT, if I keep spamming CTRL + C like crazy, it then kills the process. Perhaps try that?

ctrl + c should work, one of the few things I like about Macs is that terminal commands are still ctrl based so your usual shortcuts like copy/paste work in terminal with no changes. If ctrl + c doesn't work, you could try: ctrl + z suspends tasks rather than killing them but is often more responsive open a second terminal, kill your python process (use top to find your process and its ID and then kill just close the terminal close VSCode, this is annoying but closing VSCode stops the terminals.

As the title says, I'm an absolute noob at VSC, I'm using it for Python. Previously, I used to use Notepad++, but it's been bugging me.
Basically , I have a bad habit of creating infinite loops and generally I've been able to set up keyboard shortcuts to terminate the code. Having trouble finding an answer. I've seen places say to use Ctrl + C and Ctrl + Alt + M, but neither work.
Edit: I have a Windows, not Mac.

Ctrl + C is keyboard shortcut to kill a loop.. This works in command prompt, powershell, and many linux terminals. I believe it works on Mac bash, but I don't own a mac, so I'm not sure. Sometimes you have to hit Ctrl + C twice to get it to kill the loop. Just make sure your terminal has focus when you go to kill it.

I apparently created an infinite python while loop but had to quit the app to cancel. Is there a way to just cancel the operation?
Deleting the terminal didn't help, nor closing/reopening the file. Just when I go to run the fie it always says 'already running'. Some articles said Ctrl C .. I tried it nothing happened but maybe I'm typing it in the wrong path... Do I cd into the directory the file.py is in?

First, how are you running the program? By using the integrated terminal to run it by typing out a command? If so, you would focus the terminal that is running the program and press Ctrl-C there. That should send an interrupt to the running program. Worst case, find the process in the Task Manager or equivalent on whatever OS you are using and kill it from there.

Could be a case of using Python's base exception class the wrong way: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/53325987/cannot-abort-ctrlc-in-python Other than that, regardless of OS you can kill a process from another shell. In *nix, it's something like pgrep python which gets you the PID, which you pass to kill. On Windows it's stop-process -name python in a powershell instance.
