But it's not about how to block ads per se, but more about blocking notifications and spam emails/sms. To block ads on android you have several options: If you are rooted, use AdAway. It replaces the hosts file with the list of ads domains and redirects all dns requests to these domains essentially to nowhere. Without root, use apps like Adguard that act as vpn client and filter all requests based on the ads lists. Add private dns in android settings and set it to dns.adguard-dns.com . It will redirect all your dns requests to adguard dns servers that filter ads for you. Answer from waxj1833 on reddit.com

Why Do Pop-Up Ads Appear on My Android? Quick Fixes
If you see any apps you don’t recognize, or ones you don’t think need that kind of permission (like random games, photo editors, or shopping apps), tap on them and switch **“Allow display over other apps”** to **Off**. If you're unsure about any app names you see in there, just tell me and I’ll help you figure out what they are. What stands out on your list? ... That’s actually really clean—nicely done. If those are the only ones with overlay permission, then whatever was causing the pop-ups either removed itself, had its permission revoked, or it was coming from something temporary like a browser tab or ad in an app that stopped running.

r/AndroidQuestions on Reddit: How to block ads on android
February 19, 2024 -

My older sister recently complained to me about being tired of all phone notifications, and was asking me how to block ads on android. Although I'm not tech-savvy, I realize these very basic tips might not be common knowledge to everyone. So, I thought I might as well share a few simple tricks.

  1. Stopping your data from being collected
Last year, my own phone was bombarded with spam emails. I decided to stop the problem altogether. I learned that there are services that scan which companies collect data about you, use it to send spam emails, and then these data removal services send requests to remove your details. I might not have explained it well, but I think this reddit post does.

  2. How to block ads on your phone
I personally find them very annoying because you hear sound, you look into your phone and instead of messages from friends there is some unnecessary ad. Luckily, they are easy to block.
Go to Settings > Apps, find the app that's spamming you, tap on 'Notifications', and turn off 'Allow notifications'. This should stop the pop-ups from apps.

  3. Blocking unwanted text ads
If you get a text from a number you don't want messages from, you can usually block it right from the message by choosing the 'Block' option. It’s probably one of the easiest and cheapest ways.

  4. Dealing with spam emails
Gmail has quite an effective and easy-to-use spam filter. Marking email as spam should definitely be your first step. I believe this redditor wrote a few more good tips.
I know these are very basic tips on blocking ads on android, but, as I said, some people don’t know how to do even that. So I hope it helps. And If you have tips to add, please share.

I can't make an original reddit post. I do not know why. So I am making this 'ADS related' comment here which seems similar to the original question. I play 3D Euchre using an MP3 PLAYER with the Android OS. Most in game ads allow an exit route either thru 'arrow/x' or 'close button' or straight 'X'. However I get some ads for games from the TIK TOK Pte Ltd company. There is no way I can see to exit some of these ADS. No 'x'/'CLOSE'/etc. I go into a loop (after hitting the 'square' system button) suggesting I install GOOGLE PLAY/ which then (after I chose 'x' or 'square button' or 'clear') goes to an AD for TIK-TOK. Both ADS capture the full screen My only escape is to 'cancel everything', which of course closes thee 3D EUCHRE app. Note I have neither GOOGLE PLAY nor TIK-TOK installed on the MP3 player. Thanks and all responses are greatly appreciated and will be given a try, except the ones of course which suggest I seek refuge in HADES or do something physically interesting but maybe incapacitating.

This happened after downloading some BP and blood sugar monitoring app (it wasn’t me). I deleted the app but the ads still keep popping up every 5 seconds when I turn on my WiFi. It always leads me to another suspicious app on playstore and sometimes a website using the Samsung Internet browser.

I restarted it already and changed some app settings for extra security and privacy but it didn’t work. Even with the wifi off, ads attempt to show up (but nothing pop ups anyway just some black lines at the bottom)

The ads are so annoying I want it to stop. Is there any way to fix this 😭

I finally, after a day of trying to figure it out, found that I had malware/virus operating in the background of my Android LG velvet 5g and spamming me with ads even opening the ads without my consent or permission. All I had to do was go to my settings, applications/application manager, and look for any unrecognized or suspicious apps. I found THREE apps which were UNNAMED and HAD NO IMAGE ICON next to them! Just random blank ads I DEFINITELY got from torrenting/ect. I removed all 3 and VIOLA!!! no more problems. Just been struggling educating myself on tech things and figured this would help someone else out who doesn't understand how to locate/identify virus apps causing problems on their device. THANKS!!!
