There's really no in between (short of making an entire new account and not accepting any chat requests from this person, but abandoning your original account would look the same as restricting them, since messages are going through but you're not viewing or replying to them) besides the person actively not trying to type and send messages, but that's their prerogative. I accepted this message request a while back and now I don’t want the person to be able to contact me. I don’t like blocking them because they will know that they’ve been blocked. Also, if I’m just gonna restrict them, they’d still be able to message me, and it will only look like I’m just ignoring them. Is there any other way to stop them from messaging me? Please help.

Block and restrict ARE the only two options. Block is 100% on the platform. With restrict they will know and will see a message stating that the person is unable to receive messages from you right now.

I'm not sure if you can in either app, but I know you can on the web version of Facebook. If you go to your chat sidebar and click the gear icon in the lower left and go to Block settings, it'll take you to a settings page that allows you to designate people to which you can block messages from or block entirely. A friend of mine has lost it and keeps sending either naked women or porn and I keep telling him not to as it is NSFW and he doesn't even know what NSFW is. He isn't bad guy at heart so I don't wanna block him completely.
