I wouldn't recommend thinning anything by more than 10%. Thinning it more changes the chemical properties of the product. Emerald Urethane is thick, so if you plan on using your HVPL gun, you will most likely use a larger needle and nozzle. Most manufacturers recommend a 5 or 6 fluid needle and nozzle for that product. And depending on your HVLP set up, it may be tricky. If it's just a cheap HVLP gun from Harbor Freight, you're gonna have a bad time. If it's a Graco or Titan HVLP, make sure the turbine of the system is at least a 5 stage turbine. Trying to push it with too small of a turbine will result in spitting that will impact the final finish. If you decide to brush or roll it, use a higher end nylon/polyester brush or roller cover. Why do you want to thin it? With the correct tip size you should not need to. Not recommended.

I am about to spray paint my kitchen cabinets that I am building. I did a test piece, which turned out okay. But from what I understand I should be able to get an even smoother finish, since I am using a spray gun and a nice paint like Sherwin Williams EUTE. Do y'all have any advice for how I can improve the finish?
Details of my process:
Substrate = birch plywood, sanded to 220 grit
HVLP sprayer = Super Finish Max HVLP Sprayer using a 2.0 mm tip
Primed with one coat of SW Wall & Wood Primer
Sanded after priming w/ 600 grit sandpaper (might be too high? - it's what I had on hand)
Sprayed first coat of Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel paint in semi-gloss
Next day I lightly sanded and applied a second coat of paint
Each coat dried with the test piece laying down, to give it the best chance of leveling out.
50% overlap when spraying
I suspect I might have applied it too thinly. I read a post of this sub about someone applying EUTE too thickly, which resulted in the paint failing to fully cure, even months later. One of the comments said that darker colors take longer to cure, as well. For those reasons I was a bit afraid of putting it on too thick, and I used a smaller 2.0 mm tip (I have 1.4, 2.0, and 4.0 mm tips). Does it look like I sprayed too thinly, or is there some other cause?
Any recommendations on how to get a smoother finish are greatly appreciated.

Try thinning the paint so it flows better. Water based paints are incredibly thick to be able to atomize through an hvlp gun. I always thin to a 6 second drip - that means it stops dripping off the stir stick after 6 seconds. And I've had no issues with water based paints not leveling out or drying properly by thinning them. With an hvlp gun, you're also applying the paint in much thinner coats than with an airless.

1.5 is correct. You will need a 5 stage turbine, and thin no more than 10% with retarder (or water). Your current tip is too big, and too much paint. Turn air up all the way. Turn fluid down to about half way or less. Test on cardboard. Make adjustments. Look for fine atomization along the edges of your spray pattern.
