Fill out the title as if it was a regular transfer. Front and back with signatures, odometer disclosure (only required if vehicle is 2011 model year or newer), and back of the title with the new owners information + signature. Either leave the purchase price section on the back of the title blank or write “family” in it. At the DMV (or you can print it online) you will need a REG 256 form (Statement of Facts) and complete the use tax and smog exemption sections marking family transfer for each. Then sign said form. Hope this helps!! Answer from amansingh1211 on reddit.com

r/DMV on Reddit: Transferring title to family member (brother) in California
October 13, 2022 -

Hi All,

Completely new at this as it would be the first time transferring ownership. I have a car that I would like to give to my brother and remove my name from ownership. I do have the physical certificate of title in-hand.

How simple or difficult is this to do, and is it an instant process, or one that can take weeks to process? It's something I would like to take care of ASAP, so if it can be finalized in the same day then that would be awesome.

I am doing some reading but do not want to mess anything up.

Also we are both AAA members (I am not insured with AAA, just have a membership),in the same city, and I read you can do it through them to avoid long lines.
