Hi All,
Completely new at this as it would be the first time transferring ownership. I have a car that I would like to give to my brother and remove my name from ownership. I do have the physical certificate of title in-hand.
How simple or difficult is this to do, and is it an instant process, or one that can take weeks to process? It's something I would like to take care of ASAP, so if it can be finalized in the same day then that would be awesome.
I am doing some reading but do not want to mess anything up.
Also we are both AAA members (I am not insured with AAA, just have a membership),in the same city, and I read you can do it through them to avoid long lines.

Just sign and date the front title. Your brother fills out the back for new owner. Go to AAA and they’ll issue a new Registration on your brother’s name, then a new title will come in the mail on his in a two weeks.

It’s pretty simple. And since your brothers you can get a smog exception and a tax exemption since it’s a family transfer. You would have to fill out a statement of facts form. Just tell the person helping you at DMV or AAA that it’s a family transfer and they will know what to do.

Hello,
So I am trying to help my mother transfer a car title under her name to my brother ?
The vehicle is paid off and the only thing we want to do is transfer title title from mom to my brother. How do I do this online? You can start the process online through the virtual field office or come in person. Eventually you will have to come in person or mail it to finalize the transfer. I recommend coming in person to make sure your brother will walk out with the registration in his name and the transfer being finalized that day. Your mom will fill out the front of the title section 1a as well as odometer on the bottom. Your brother will fill out the buyer part of the odometer disclosure as well as the back of the title where it states new registered owner. A statement of facts, REG 256, would also be needed so a smog won’t be required for transfer because it is family and also to state if the vehicle was gifted.
