Hello everyone, I traded in my old vehicle to a dealership and financed a new vehicle. The new vehicle was purchased in North Carolina.
What do I need to transfer the tags from my old vehicle to my new vehicle? I’m still a SC resident living in SC.
I told the dealer I would like to keep the plates to use on my new vehicle, and they said I had 45 days to transfer the tags, but I could use the plate on the new vehicle until then..
Also the dealer said they wouldn’t be able to transfer the tags on their own because it has to be done in the county the vehicle was originally registered.
On my end, I was provided the bill of sale/purchase agreement for the new vehicle, I also retained the old registration for the sold vehicle, and both vehicles are insured in my name. I do not have a copy of the title.
Can anyone provide some clarification on this? I have never done this before! Thank you in advance!

If u financed tags in the new car price in NC u should return those in hand to nc dmv to get refund. The sc tags u want to use u will need to visit a sc dmv but u maybe looking at paying taxes again and or the wheel tax for sc Bc those two states have different vehicle requirements. U bought the new car in nc so that dealer has no idea about sc probably. But if u are driving on car with sc tags right now that’s illegal fyi…if u don’t have the title bc it’s financed is fine u need to visit dmv and they can look it up. I moved from va to nc to sc and had to retitle my vehicles. A lot of different info per state and nc to sc was just three years ago.

Just bought a car in WA. I am planning on transferring a tag to this one that expires in 2024. 1) will I have to pay taxes before transferring since it has not expired? 2) if the bank has the title, what documentation do I need? Thanks!

To transfer a tag, you will need BOS, current registration, proof of sales tax paid and proof of insurance. There is a road tax fee not to exceed $500. There may be additional tag fee if new (to you) vehicle is a pickup truck. Otherwise, most money would be $525 (sales tax was paid). If sales tax not paid, it is 5% of purchase price not to exceed $500. Unless bought from family member. Must complete within 45 days of sale date on BOS.
