There's a message put out by Blizzard to update BIOS when you have a 13th or 14th gen Intel processor.

I checked the FAQ on the Asus support page on how to safely do this because I don't like messing with BIOS.

There's some options on how to do it, one of them using a program to install in Windows - AI suite 3 - and to other way is to directly access the BIOS on startup and update from there.

I installed the AI suite 3 first but the EZ installer component is not there so can't update via that. Then I went into the BIOS and 3 times in a row, while navigating to Tools and select the BIOS file on my USB drive, it freezes and I need to reboot the PC.

I'm pretty hesitant to proceed, I don't want to brick my PC and I'm not too tech savvy so no clue how to proceed from here.

Any suggestions? Should I even bother with the update at all?

If you have either a 13th or 14th generation CPU it's highly recommended to install the latest BIOS which will include the Intel microcode to prevent CPU over temperature and voltage spikes. Make sure your USB stick is formatted as FAT32. Download the latest BIOS from the Asus website (1805) and extract to your USB stick. Don't update your BIOS via Windows only do it through the EzFlash utility in the BIOS tools.

Correct BIOS upgrade instructions for Z790 motherboard

I was able to update the BIOS without blowing up my computer tonight. Downloaded latest BIOS (FJe) from: https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/Z790-AORUS-ELITE-AX-rev-1x/support#support-dl-bios Formatted my USB stick with FAT32. Extracted ZIP contents to that USB stick. Rebooted into BIOS. Inserted the USB stick into my front USB port and went to Q-Flash menu. Pointed to the file and then it started verifying and installing it. When it went to reboot, I took out the USB stick and watched it cycle through a few reboots until it was done. More on reddit.com

How do I update the BIOS on this Asus motherboard without a CPU ?

If you have to have a GPU for video, install it in a lower slot and boot up to the BIOS and install the most current BIOS. Once done you will be able to move the GPU up to the #1 PCI-e slot and install a M.2 in the top socket. I'm looking for instructions and links to correctly upgrade my motherboard.

In the current BIOS, it says it's the 'Z790 AORUS ELITE AX' with BIOS version Fld.

What's the correct URL for the firmware? Their website is so confusing with the different models.

Where are the correct instructions to upgrade? Do I need to use the USB port in the back?

In the left-under corner of your motherboard you find the correct revision number printed so you can be sure you get the right BIOS version for your motherboard.
