Considering how long ago Apple discontinued the Airport family, I wouldn’t back up anything on one. You need the external IP address, not the local address, to connect to a remote device. And you need a rule on your router (which may not be configurable). Bottom line: buy yourself a cheap external drive, back up there. More on reddit.com

The Time Capsule was an Apple router with a drive built in. Time Machine needs a drive to back up to, so you’ll either have to connect to a network with a shared drive, or plug an external drive in and tell Time Machine to use it, or buy a Time Capsule. An external drive is probably your best bet.
