On your phone go to Settings> Wallet & Apple Pay and set Apple Cash as your default card. Also, when you go to pay with Apple Pay, after you double-click on your phone or watch, your default card will appear, but you can just scroll and select any other card that you have on your Apple Wallet, then pay with that. Yes… as with most cash back cards, your best bet is to always use it to pay down the card balance - if you use it for purchases, you don’t get more cash back on it.

I have $50 Apple Cash in my wallet. I was at a store today and tried to make a $20 purchase on the store's terminal using the cash balance. The payment kept getting rejected. Is it not possible to use the cash balance at a point of sale terminal?

I have found that I only ever used Apple Cash to transfer money to other individuals, and that was fie for me. I thought that they would allow you to transfer it to your bank account, like PayPal does, but I have ever tried it myself because I do’t keep a balance on hand in my Apple Cash account. I have heard of a few people having Apple freeze their Apple Cash accounts causing them to lose all the money they had i them. I would rather to give Apple any more money than I have to, so I try not to carry any balances in my accounts.
