How do you use contactless payment from within the wallet app (not button double-tap)
You still have to double tap the side button from the wallet app to prompt for Face ID and then arm Apple Pay to communicate with a payment terminal. I think Apple seems it a security measure to verify Face ID before proceeding with payment. It’ll arm your default card I think. If you select a specific card while in the wallet app (when you can see the latest transactions for that card) and then double tap, it’ll arm that specific card instead. More on reddit.com

How secure is Apple Pay?
Apple Pay is safer than using a physical credit, debit, or prepaid card. Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode is required for purchases on your iPhone, Apple Watch, Mac, or iPad. Your identity isn’t shared with merchants, and they don’t see your actual card number. And your card numbers are never stored on Apple servers. When you pay in stores, neither Apple nor your device will send your actual card number to merchants. When you pay online in Safari or in apps, the merchant will only receive information you authorize to fulfill your order — such as your name, email address, and billing and shi

r/iphone on Reddit: How do you use contactless payment from within the wallet app (not button double-tap)
July 22, 2025 -

TL;DR: How do you arm/prepare a card for payment from within the Wallet app? (i.e., NOT using the double-tap lock button method)

Details: This is probably a silly question but after 15 min of googling every guide just tells you to double tap the lock button.

Today I was trying to make a contactless payment and the double-tap was not working for some reason. I tried opening the wallet app manually but couldn't get the card to work.

When you use the double-tap it does a face id and then a "hold near reader" prompt appears, indicating that the card is armed and ready to communicate with the POS machine. However, when you open the wallet app it shows the card but there's no indication that it's ready for payment and nothing happened when I held it near the POS. I tried tapping the card but this only seemed to show the "latest transactions" list and again holding it near the POS did nothing.
