I'm going to make a gentle suggestion, and I mean it respectfully, but everyone in this sub is going to downvote me into oblivion for saying it. Deep breath: if you upgrade to a more mature DAW, your life will be easier. Audacity has some limitations that slow your workflow down. Two huge examples (unless something has changed) You cannot make edits while the audio is playing Audacity doesn't allow for real-time plugin processing I can edit a 60-min podcast, at 1x playback, in about 70-minutes in Presonus Studio One (that's just the DAW I use, it's not especially speedier than Pro Tools or Logic Pro or whatever, it's just the right fit for me). That same 60-min podcast, at 1x playback, in Audacity, would probably take me 2-3 hours. I've been editing podcasts since 2010, and I'm fluent in 5 DAWs + Audacity. In order to edit as fast in Audacity as I edit in Studio One, I need to play the audio back at 2x to make up for problem #1. To some extent, everyone can get fast with Audacity, as they get familiar with it and as they learn the shortcuts necessary to navigate it better, but problems 1 & 2, no matter how good you get at Audacity, are sticking points for productivity. Stopping playback to make an edit extends your overall time-in-daw. Not being able to hear the effect of a plugin over more than the 5-second sample, means you're eq-ing (or whatever) an entire piece of audio based on a 5-second sample. If you want to go faster, and if you're going to commit to learning, my suggestion is to do so with an actual DAW - which Audacity is not. EDIT: PS, if you want to see what I do to my audio, look for the FX Chain post I made earlier today (or maybe last night, I can't remember). Answer from Deleted User on reddit.com

Record, no. Mix and render, yes. If you have any prior audio editing experience, it's pretty point-and-click. If not, it's still user friendly once you play around for an hour or so.

What order to edit/add effects in (using Audacity)
Normalize the different items to the same loudness Edit out the unwanted parts Remove discrete noise like clicks, pops... Remove full time noise like hum and fan noise I'd recommend to eq first any unwanted frequencies (not always necessary) Compress to reduce the dynamic range Normalize to 16 LUFS Add a -1 dB limiter This is my workflow in Reaper, so some things might differ in Audacity. Delete sections that you will not use , e.g. you might only want the first 30 seconds of a song · Move the music/sound effects to the area you wish it to be · Change the volume of the music as you wish using the envelope tool, e.g. have the music start loud, and then become quieter as you speak over the top, before becoming louder again · If you are using music/sound throughout the podcast, remember that there are two ways to paste, one that shifts everything else on the track and one that doesn’t.

You can always edit the podcast episode afterward, but it's preferable to record in mono from the start. There's a third dropdown to select your output device where you can choose your headphones, studio monitors, or your audio interface. Pick yours, and you're all set for the next step! To avoid issues, connect all your devices from step 1 before you open Audacity.

December 12, 2022 - Audacity can make its own MP3s with LAME, but I don't recommend it. LAME works best for music encoded at variable bitrate (VBR). This isn't good for podcasting. Constant bitrate (CBR) is best for podcasting, but LAME's CBR is terrible. LAME doesn't accommodate mono files well when you set the bitrate. LAME will make mono and stereo both use ...
