iPhones work with Google Pay but iPhones don’t use Google Pay, they use a different app. Google Pay is Android only. Apple Wallet is what you’re looking for. You can tap it at any place that accepts nfc transactions including those that accept Google pay. More on reddit.com

I have a folder of all the Google apps I use. I'm very much in the Google ecosystem so having an iPhone was a little bothersome at first, but the majority of Google apps are available and I have no shame using them. Now I will say, I have at least given the Apple apps a chance to see if there's things I like. Apple maps having g the speed on it is very nice, hopefully Google maps does the same soon, as their Waze app already does. But I use Google apps daily on my iPhone. My guilty pleasure sometimes is saying "hey Siri, open assistant" and she opens Google assistant on my phone for me to do my searches and commands. More on reddit.com

I upgraded from the iPhone X yesterday to the 16 pro and no matter what I do I cannot get my Apple Wallet to add the same exact card. In the Apple forums this is a common issue and I’ve tried many of the things people have posted that worked for them to no avail. So I thought hmmm maybe I’ll just put my card in Google Pay and use it that way. I did that via web browser and Google Pay/Wallet on a browser accepted my card fine. So I figured I needed to download a Google wallet app or google pay app in order to use it for tap to pay with my phone. When I look up instructions online it says to download Google Pay app but according to other searches that app has been discontinued in the US on Apple as of June of 2024? As well as the Google Wallet app.
So my question is does my iPhone have some other way of accessing my Google Pay/Wallet so I can use my phone for tap to pay until this Apple Pay/Wallet issue is fixed with my card? I feel I’m about to get the run around like I’ve read so many other people deal with because already my bank acted like they had no idea what I was talking about when I said I may need the old apple merchant token removed from my card so I can try it again on a new phone. She said “the other lady I wanna ask has an iPhone and she’s with a customer; let me call you back I bet she knows…” which isn’t instilling a lot of confidence. My next call is to Apple but I guarantee they are just going to say “call your bank” because the message that pops up says “card not added. Contact your card issuer for more information.” 🤬

I did not read most of your post, but in a nutshell- no you cannot use Google Pay as an alternative to the built in tap to pay Apple wallet functionality. You can use it like you use PayPal. It’s just a transaction tool for sites that accept it.
