Need some help with gradients
Yeah they've changed it a bit. Up to the left, in the context menu or in the properties tab is where you pick presets. Like in your case you could pick a simple black to white gradient. Next make your gradient. You now make your changes on the canvas. Double click the two circles at the ends of the gradient to change their colors. Drag around the diamond symbol to change the transition point. You can also add more colors by clicking below the gradient bar when the cursor gets a + next to it. You can also freely tilt it and move it around. More on reddit.com

Hi, animation student here, I’m pretty experienced in Photoshop, but I’ve recently updated to Photoshop 2024, and I can’t figure out how to attach my own colours to the gradient tool. When I click the tool, I can only see the default options given. Any clue?

It's a new setup. There should be a dropdown that says "Gradient" and under it "Classic Gradient". You can change to the classic and it will be like the old version. I like the new one because you can edit it more while it's live on the canvas. But I switched back to Classic because it's faster and easier for me with my type of work.

Yes it's possible.
Add an adjustment layer to an image, and select the mask thumbnail in the layers panel. It will be highlighted with a white outline showing that it is selected.
Choose the gradient tool, set a black to white gradient from the drop down
- Click and drag on the main image window, and the gradient will be applied to the selected mask.
Note: you can also use this method to apply a gradient to any layer mask, not just adjustment layer masks. You can also paint with brushes directly on a layer mask to edit it, you aren't just limited to using the gradient tool. Painting in white makes the mask opaque, painting in black makes the mask transparent, painting in shades of grey makes the mask semi-transparent.

Grab the Gradient Tool...
.... set the Gradient to Black -> White, or Black -> Transparent..
....then click-drag on the layer mask in the direction you want the gradient to follow.
As far as I'm aware, there's no "automated" way to fill any layer mask (on an adjustment layer or any other layer type) with a gradient. It always required the user to click-drag with the Gradient Tool.
