r/HomeImprovement on Reddit: Venting a ventless gas fireplace?
September 18, 2023 -

I don't really understand the mechanics of how a gas fireplace works without a vent. I read about it online but it still doesn't make sense to me. Every time we fire up our ventless fireplace, we can smell some gassy fumes. It's not obnoxious, but enough for me to buy a carbon monoxide and gas detector to plug in the room.

Our burner is in a hearth that was previously a wood burning fireplace, and the damper can still open. Again, online articles claim that venting a ventless gas burner is a bad idea but I don't see why. Is there any reason not to do so if I don't care about heat efficiency?

Convert ventless propane fireplace to vented? P
Most applications that vent through the roof can just depend on gravity for a natural draft. Other considerations are the distance of the vent from windows and doors and height from the ground and/or roof. These vary depending on your local codes. Personally I would forget about converting your existing ventless to a vented.

Answer (1 of 2): You don’t. At least you don’t really convert an unvented fireplace. You can replace it. If you have a universal unvented firebox with unvented logs, where the firebox and logs are a la carte, you could re-use the logs in a wood burning (vented) fireplace.
