April 16, 2026 - The most common postcode format is numerical. However, some places use an alphanumeric postal code system, including Argentina, Canada, the UK, Brunei, Malta and the Netherlands. Alphanumeric systems make it possible to code many more addresses in one place, because you can build more variations using letters and numbers together, than from numbers alone.

Why isn't it letting me enter my postcode? What 'suggested format' do I need to do? Can someone give me an example? (not with your actual postcode of course)
If you're from the UK, your postcode should just be your postcode. As I understand it, there is no UK postcode that starts with 2. Just put in your entire postcode as you would normally put, and the "Please enter ..." message should either go away, or not matter. I believe the space should either go before the last 3 symbols in the postcode, or just before the last number. More on reddit.com

How do you spell out Shanghai addresses in English?
Do you mean (1) what's best for mailing things besides actual Chinese or (2) what looks most official and standard when writing English or (3) what should be the standard in a perfect world? The answers to all three are different. For 1, actually it doesn't seem to matter, they are great at figuring out what the crap you meant. And still might steal your stuff. For 2, follow the lead of the metros I think. Sometimes confusing because, for instance, Nanjing Dong Lu is East Nanjing Road, whereas some roads have the second character as a direction but actually it's not and you should leave it as part of the name. For 3, I think just leaving it as pinyin exactly as it's said in Mandarin is best, because it's more likely to be useful in a broad spectrum of situations and it's really not worth the confusion and lack of usefulness to a Mandarin speaker to convert Lu to Road, Jie to Street, Dong to East and so on. Anyone dealing with streets in Shanghai should just meet their friend Mr. "lu", it's not so bad. More on reddit.com
