This is probably a long shot, but I am taking a group to Alvord desert for a star gazing trip and I’m drawn to the howl for its low light / high heat potential. There are a ton of reviews online but, it seems like most are paid and that’s fine, but I’m hoping to maybe get an unpaid review? It’s super pricey, but maybe it’s awesome?

I can't help on the Howl R4, but I have the Howl R1 and it has been really solid. Build Quality and heat output is really good. The R4 looks super cool, but a tad large / expensive. The lack of folding feet is what pushed me toward the R1. Best of luck - interested also to hear what feedback is on the R4.

I'm looking at an option for the smokey wood campfire that is portable to pack on a long spring/summer overlanding trip.
Right now I'm focused on these three and would love to hear any personal experiences like how they hold up in general and how long they run on a 10/20 lb tank.

I have the Ignik and like it well enough. This would be my first portable propane firepit, so I don’t have a lot to compare it to. The Ignik hasn’t done wrong by me yet. I put a few of the Ignik brand “moon rock” in my can so I don’t have to look at that shiny gas-train. While compact and light, it doesn’t put off much heat. It has bailed me out of fire ban situations where sites wouldn’t allow wood burning, but they were okay with the propane. I’ve had mine for about a year and no issues and I mainly use it for my backyard as I enjoy a proper wood fire when I camp.

I just ordered the Howl R1 and intend to review it and make a video on it comparing it to my Ignik Firecan Elite. I like the IFE with moon rocks because you can keep it on low flame and get it nice and close to warm up the legs. As a party fire, not super great for heat+light- it’s good for one or the other one at a time. I think any of the fire options out there are more than enough light output- propane fires tend to be extremely bright, too bright for comfortable staring to be frankly honest. My own interest in the Howl R1 is how much radiant heat it actually puts out in comparison to the IFE with rocks- if it’s better, it’s objectively it will be a nicer fire overall due to not having to carry soot covered rocks and having a nicer flame in general.

I haven't tested this yet, but HOWL claims at full blast with both A-flame and Barcoals running, it will use up a 20-lb propane bottle in around 6 hours. While this is a negative point for sure, I look at it this way: the amount of propane consumed on a typical stay at hunting camp still costs less and is way more convenient to haul than the equivalent amount of firewood I would use during the same time duration.
