Hi! I’m looking for a Home printer (monochrome, preferably laser)
The Brother HL L2405W is easily one of the best and most reliable monochrome laser printers out there. Built like a tank, it will last for years. It has wifi but no Ethernet, though there is an Ethernet version that costs a little more. I also suggest looking at this comprehensive datasheet of printers I came across recently. It is very well organized and easy to use. More on reddit.com

Best cheap (new) black/white printer?
I got a Brother Laser Printer for about 90 bucks off Amazon and it is great. Much cheaper to use than an inkjet and you never have to worry about a cartridge drying out. More on reddit.com

Best printer for color and black&white prints
Highly recommend a Brother Laser Jet Printer. Color anything simply cost more. What it comes down to when talking quality is how good do you really need that quality because for most people Laser Jet will simply be good enough. If not your going to pay much more and it tends to be a bit more problematic when it comes to ink. Ink cost much more than toner. Ink dries up if not used and toner does not. Ink clogs nozzles and can require test pages before an actual print wasting even more ink. Toner doesn't use nozzles. Laser Jet isn't the best quality but it simply reduces your cost and toner cartridges never dry up if not used. I get the feeling you won't need an ink printer. If you were strictly printing photos then that would be much different. Your best bet is to determine what print technology you want to use first. My guess is after simply taking a look at the cost you"ll determine Laser Jet to be the best fit. Keep, in mind Color still will be more expensive than B/W. Where you have one toner cartridge with B/W you have four cartridges with Color Laser Jets. Color Toner simply cost more. The initial toner cartridges you get with a Laser Printer are starter cartridges only and from then on it's on you. The less costly Laser Printer you get the greater chance those replacement cartridges will cost more than the printer originally cost you. These all vary depending on the model you get. Granted the page count per toner cartridge is an estimate at best but at least that gives you some idea to go by, so use that when determining what your costs are going to be. I highly recommend you take a look at the cost of your supplies such as replacement cartridges and replacement drums which Brother Laser Jets require at specific intervals. See what various packages of toner cartridges can cost and specifically look at the highest capacity toner cartridges as upfront it cost more but per print will cost you less. The larger more expensive printers may cost you more upfront but in the long run cost you less per page to operate. You may very well want to buy at least your first replacement toner cartridges just so you have those on hand when you run out. Also learn the tricks of how to extend the life of your toner cartridges when the machine tells you they need to be replaced. Typically this has less to do with how much toner is left and more to do with how many pages have been printed. YouTube can be real helpful here. This can vary by machine. Some people use third party cartridges as the cost for these will be much less. I don't but supposedly if you look on Amazon you can find some that may work perfectly fine for you. Your going to have to look at the reviews, however I personally wouldn't rely on this just in case they aren't as good, but like I said I don't do that but some swear by it. Given the cost once you look it's pretty easy to tell why they do, Not only would I recommend you get a Brother Laser Jet I would recommend you consider getting a MFC for the added functionality. These things last a good long time so it's typically worth getting those with greater functionality. I bought a more expensive unit personally because it came with a Multi Feeder for the scanner. Manual scanning is a pain in the ass and takes much longer. I'm thinking you"ll be easily able to justify this in the long run. Compare the various printers side by side and the various functionality and determine not only your current needs but what you might need for years to come. I even got a fax capable unit just because I use that every once in a great while. It used to be separate scanners where best that is no longer true and besides you don't get a multi feed scanner on a separate stand alone scanner. More on reddit.com

Do PCL and PostScript Matter in a Laser Printer?

Do you need HP's PCL or Adobe's PostScript? Support for one or both of these two page-description languages (PDLs) is critical for those who need it, but otherwise irrelevant. PCL was once standard for business users, and is still required in some cases, but is not usually needed. PostScript can be essential for pre-proofing commercial print jobs, particularly in concert with desktop-publishing applications that won't work without it. It also guarantees that when printing a document, page breaks and line breaks will be the same when printing on any PostScript printer, and also the same as you saw on screen, assuming the program was set to use a PostScript driver. (Converting it to PDF format serves the same purpose.)

Generally speaking, if you're in a position to buy a printer for your business, you should already know if you need one or the other of these PDLs. If you don't need them, you can often find an identical or similar model for less from the same manufacturer, minus only the PCL or PostScript support. Don't pay extra for it if you don't need it.

Will a Laser Printer Cost More or Less Than a Comparable Inkjet?

As surprising as it may seem, a laser printer can be less expensive in the long run than a comparable inkjet. You really have to look at the total cost of ownership to figure that out, though.

A common complaint about lasers is that laser toner cartridges are expensive compared with inkjet cartridges. For inexpensive models, the cost can even exceed the cost of the printer, particularly for color lasers if you need to replace a full set of cartridges (black, cyan, magenta, and yellow toners). But if you compare the cost per page, rather than the price per cartridge, you'll find the running cost for cartridge-based lasers is actually less than for comparable cartridge-based inkjets. In addition, most lasers are designed to last longer than most inkjets, so you can amortize the initial cost of the printer over more pages as well.

Be aware that tank-based inkjets can beat lasers on running cost, which complicates any broad-brushstroke comparison of costs between the two technologies. The tank-based models cost more than equivalent inkjets that use cartridges, but they let you use far cheaper ink, which you typically pour from bottles into large tanks in the printer. There are also a few lasers that take a similar approach, selling toner in bulk "injectors" rather than in cartridges.

Ultimately, focusing on initial price only or on running costs only when comparing printers is likely to lead to the wrong conclusion about which will be cheaper. You need to take both into account by estimating the total cost of ownership over the printers' lifetimes. How to Save Money on Your Next Printer: Weighing the Cost of Tank vs. Cartridge Ink gives a step-by-step example of how to compare tank and cartridge inkjets. The same approach will work with any two printers. And don't forget to factor in the possible savings from ink subscription plans if any are available for a printer you're considering.

May 9, 2023 -

I'm not all that knowledgeable about printers, so forgive my foolishness in advance. I live in Australia, Melbourne. I am looking to purchase a new printer based on a few factors. These include:

-Black and white printing (color not necessary).

-Reliable brand.

-Should have warranty.

-The cost of cartridge shouldn't be extremely pricey (from what I'm aware, some printers sell for cheap, but REALLY jack up the cartridge prices), assuming these are still being used.

-Having a scanner would be a plus, though this is a fairly flexible part of things, and a drastically cheaper option without a scanner may be a better choice.

-Should work with both mac and windows.

I don't need something with tons of incredible features, or extremely fast printing (slow is totally fine), or whatever. I primarily need something that will work when I need it to, won't jam frequently, won't constantly ask to have something replaced when I've already replaced it, and something where it won't dry out because I haven't used it in a while. Budget items are fine and all, but I certainly don't want to buy something that'll start crapping out on me and continually have issues after a few months. I guess I'm looking for the AK-47 of printers, if that makes sense.

I suppose that having a direct USB connect would be a minor bonus to avoid potential connection issues, but that's a very minor point.

If anyone has any suggestions, I'd appreciate hearing them.

Thank you.
