I have an old HP desktop that I want to repair but couldn't find anything online to help me with it. When turning it on, it creates a single long beep and doesn't display anything. The lights on the front works and I could hear the fans spinning. If it hardware hardware related, how would I know which part of the PC is having issues. Not sure what the model is but the tag is saying Hp Compaq Pro 6300 SFF - SRP US.
Hello fellow techies,
In another typical case of "oh lemme just fix this real quick" gone south, I have a "HP ProDesk 400 G5 small form factor-pc" I've gotten as a freebee about a year ago that I've found a potential new home for. It's from 2019 so not even that old. It sports an i3 8100 with UHD630 for graphics. When I got it, it booted up and ran just fine, and has since been in storage.
So, I thought I'd just boot it up, let Windows erase all contents and be done with it for today. As you might've guessed this is not how things worked out.
At first, I plugged it into the wall outlet and only connected my monitor. I waited for something to appear on the screen, but alas. I waited patiently some more when I noticed it was going in reboot cycles, turning off briefly in between. Turned it off and went and got my keyboard and mouse, hooked them up and tried once more. Yay, it worked, or so I thought.
I got into Windows just fine, plugged in a Wi-Fi dongle and connected to my network. All good. Went into Settings and started the procedure to erase all contents, chose the "long" option, turned off my monitor and went for dinner.
When I came back, the screen stayed blank again when I turned it back on and I didn't get any response from the system anymore at all. I've since tried to:
-
Boot with less, or no peripherals attached
-
Tried the other DisplayPort
-
Reset the CMOS
-
Re-seated the single RAM module
-
Moved the RAM to the other slot
-
Tried a different RAM module from a working computer
-
Powered the system without any RAM at all
-
Powered the system without the M2 SSD
-
Re-seated the CPU
-
Checked the back of the mainboard for corrosion or damage (there was none)
At some point (probably after resetting CMOS) I started getting a single short beep a few seconds after pressing the power button. If I press the power button any time after hearing the beep, the computer turns off instantly. The only other time something changes is when I try to run it without any RAM at all, which is when it gives the appropriate light/ beep code which is 3 long/ red and 2 short/ white. This is leading me to believe it's not completely dead.
The HP support website is no help either as it only lists error codes that start with at least 2 long beeps/ red lights. Among the list is one for graphic chip failure, which of course it isn't doing.
So yeah, I'm now more than 3 hours into something that should've cost less than 10 minutes of actual hands-on time and I'm still scratching my head.. I do not have a lot of experience with pre-built computers like this so I'm hoping I've missed something obvious and someone can point me in the right direction.
Thanks for your time! :)

According to HP https://support.hp.com/id-en/document/c01941944 there should not be a 1 beep situation. I believe in making sure that the PSU is good before trying to diagnose further in situations such as yours. You can do that by using a known good PSU or using a DVM and paperclip (to get it started). Also, it is worth disconnecting the hard drive and mouse so that they are ruled out as a problem.
I have an HP Compaq Elite 8300
The PC turns on, no red lights but there is one beep and when looking up the BIOS code for that it says it’s a memory error and I have tried reseating all the RAM as well as using one stick at a time in one slot at a time as well as removing CMOS replacing CMOS, cleaned the entire PC and replaced the RAM, reseated the CPU and reapplied thermal paste, but I get the same issue, does anyone know what could be causing the code and the beep? Can anyone help

Hello all, I brought a G2 mini PC from Amazon
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B095SYH119?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title
But now when connecting to power it gives one beep and then turns off. There is no display. Granted I am doing a bit of McGyverint by connecting to a portable display with a VGA Adapted but there is no fan at all. One beep and off.
I have tried resetting the RAM and reconnecting the SSD.
ANY IDEAS?
Thanks for the help.
My computer won’t turn on and does 3 long beeps and 3 short beeps as seen in the video. No damage was done to the Pc and was working yesterday, it started after unplugging the PC from the wall and moving it to my other desk. Is it an error code telling me that’s it’s the Graphics Card or something?
