Depends, do you want to game (and by that I mean, is it a priority besides indie games or older games) and is the touchscreen important? If the answer to the first is yes, then I'm almost certain you can find better, according to what I've seen on r/suggestalaptop (I highly recommend asking them for advice too and filling out the form in the sidebar as you do so). But if you want a touchscreen and/or aren't open to upgrading RAM yourself (I often find it's best to buy 8 GB in the laptop and buy a separate 8 GB yourself), then that's probably a decent choice. You did say general use, and for that it's pretty good IFF you have checked reviews for build quality (HP can be dodgy on some of their lines) and thermals. But since you posted on a gaming subreddit, thought I'd add that caveat above. Worth noting that I don't live in the US but I'm basing this off prices in that sub for general/gaming/touchscreen laptops. Touchscreen plus gaming usually cost a decent bit more but just one or the other is about that price, afaik. If touchscreen and gaming aren't important but you want longevity, consider a more business-grade laptop like Thinkpads. I ordered the Acer Aspire for $450 (now listed as 699) from Costco. They sent me the HP Pavilion 15 instead, which is currently listed on their site at $900. They both come with 512GB SSD, 16G RAM, backlit keyboard, and touchscreen. The Acer has Intel I5-1235u processor, a 14" screen, 1080p webcam, Windows 12, and a thunderbolt usb-C. The HP has a Ryzen 7 5825U, 15 inch screen, 720p webcam, and Windows 11.
We won't be using the laptop for much other than browsing, watching videos and movies, and basic PDF/word processing. As a 40-year old, I haven't been into gaming in years, but may try using this a little bit for some GTA or God of War. The only real preference I have at this point is for the smaller 14 inch screen.
Are these laptops essentially the same? Will a casual user like myself be able to tell the difference? Which would you go for?

Costco has a $200 off on this HP Pavilion 15.6" Touchscreen Laptop - AMD Ryzen 7 4700U - 1080p, with 16 GB RAM and 512 NVMe SSD, integrated graphics. Ends up being $650. As a general purpose machine, can I do better than this at this price? Any red flags?

If you're looking for a general purpose laptop, I don't think you need to spend that much on a laptop. Yes, on paper, the specifications are good, but you can get a good general purpose laptop for around $500 if you plan to save money. Filling out the form would help us suggest a better laptop to you.

Does anyone have experience with this model? I've struggled to find reviews or even specs from HP online. It sells for $749. Is this a good deal (or a suspiciously good deal?) for 16gb memory, 512 ssd, a 15.6 inch touchscreen and an i5 processor? Any insight would be greatly appreciated. I am a college student, and I don't plan on using it for gaming.

Pretty late but ive been using this laptop for almost 2 years now and it's amazing and looking at your use case id say go for it since i can run valorant 100+ fps on medium graphics settings. And at the time I purchased the laptop there was a deal going on where it was $200 off so it might come back.
