Before, it was annoying to download drivers using Easy Start for all my users' computers, but now HP (or Apple) has made it even worse by requiring an Apple ID! I am not the user, but the tech just trying to get the computer into the hands of the user and I don't want to babysit them when they tell me they don't have an Apple ID, or they don't remember their password, etc.
Just give me the driver the old-fashioned way! Is there any site that does that? I am struggling to find one that does not have you download Easy Start. I've found Apple's Mac Update 5.1 (https://support.apple.com/kb/dl1888?locale=en_US) but that didn't include the M402, apparently.
Since this is a middle school, we do not turn on Bonjour or Air Print (you can figure out why!). So we use network printers and we need the drivers.
If anyone has a site that has drivers for newer printers and not Easy Start or the HP Smart app, I will love you forever!
Note: I decided to try to download their HP Smart app and add the printer I needed to my computer. I am not sure if I already had the driver or not, but it did show up (lots of hoops to jump through, even so), and I copied it over to the other computer and it worked, although it showed a generic icon, in spite of me putting the icon file in the Icons folder. That will be my next question: "How to get printer icons to show up when copying drivers."
Hey guys,
I got a new Macbook recently, but my printer is still old.
On my old Macbook, I had it working but it was installed so long ago and went through so many macos upgrades that I know longer remember how it was working.

Should I download the drivers and software from HP?
Or should I just go to System pref > Printers and scanners > Add printer ?
I mainly want to print. But from time to time, very sporadically I might want to scan as well.
How do you deal with your HP printers on macOS?
In case you didnt notice... I dont like HP too much, their software on Windows is terrible. I have many traumas from dealing with HP software.
For years I've been deploying Apple's HP LaserJet driver bundle (https://support.apple.com/kb/dl1888?locale=en_US), but Apple seems to have stopped supporting it as of 2020 and since then, I've needed to hack the installer to not barf when being run on newer versions of macOS. We have 50-60 LaserJets of various models but don't want to expose them through AirPrint. My worry about just using the generic PostScript driver is that users won't be able to specify finishing options, etc. Are other people still just modifying that installer package, or is there a newer driver that I'm unaware of?
