yes. Especially if you aim for something business class. My experience with new consumer class laptops is that they never last too much longer than the warranty if you are the type to actually run around with your laptop everywhere. Business class laptops are usually built to last - your probooks, elitebooks, thinkpads. What I've also found is the used market is pretty much focused on specs - meaning you can get some incredible builds for cheap. Many business class laptops are spill proof with drain holes, designed to withstand repeated falls, and often have cool little accessibility features. More on reddit.com

HP Certified Refurbished laptops can be a good deal. Most of these manufacturer refurbished units are like new and are a good deal despite the limited 90 day warranty. HP supposedly replaced defective/damaged parts in these units with new ones. However, when I worked at Frys Electronics, I saw many certified refurbished computers with serious issues, although none with outward damage. Now, I have seen many third party refurbished computers which aren’t a good deal since they are typically older, used or corporate leases that have been merely reimaged with Windows 10. Most of the these are visibly used, often damaged and should be recycled rather than sold. I have seen Spectres sold from both categories. The certified models come in a brown box with the hp logo on the side and include an Active Pen. Those units’ condition are usually perfect, with no visible signs of use. The third party Spectres don’t come in a HP box (the box often says Microsoft Authorized Refurbished). And no pen and in fair condition. I would not trust a third party refurbished Spectre. I have also seen salesmen mischaracterize third party refurbished as certified refurbished, which is wrong. Check for an HP logo on the box. If it does, you do have a 90 day warranty through HP. If it doesn’t, take it back to MicroCenter. More on reddit.com

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Performance, build quality, and battery life.
How important is weight and thinness to you? Pretty important, looking for something easy to carry around my university.
Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14 inches or smaller
Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I don't do any intensive gaming or programming at all. I just need something that I can use to browse the internet with multiple tabs open and won't cause the laptop to heat up.
If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A
Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I would prefer something with a matte screen. Touchscreen and fingerprint readers are a must.
Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are and beneficial to the discussion. From what I've heard, business laptops like HP elitebooks, Thinkpads, and Dell Latitudes tend to be a good bet in terms of quality. I'm not particularly tech savvy, so I'm not sure what sort of processor to look for. A lot of refurbished models on ebay have Intel i5 and i7 8th, 9th, and 10th gen processors. Not sure which of these would still hold up in 2024.

I got my refurbished laptop from this store on eBay https://ebay.us/Jpwgit for under $400, and honestly, it’s been ok. It handles my day to day stuff without any issues. Battery life is good too. Mine came with an Intel i5 (8th gen) processor, and it’s still running just fine in 2024. I think it's worth checking out refurbished options on eBay, as long as you go with a trusted seller. #ad
