International student HSBC bank account
You can definitely open your account through the app. Going to the bank to open an account (as I have) just means you have a representative helping you work through the app. You should have ID and your address ready. Also, the app asks for a salary - just make an estimate for how much money you would put in there over the year. The card won't come immediately - it takes six business days (so, not including weekends and holidays) from the day of application to come in by mail. I just held out with cash in the meantime. Hope this helps! More on reddit.com

Upgraded my current account with hsbc to a student account
Last time I upgraded an account with HSBC (although this was a long time ago), the account number and sort code stayed the same, but they re-issued the card (with a new debit card number) just so the card could have a different pretty picture on the front that was specific to the student account. Should I sign up a HSBC Student Account?

Sounds like a good deal actually, but make sure it’s the account where you’re getting your loans from. I think there’s a requirement of a certain amount of money coming through every month or something

r/UniversityOfWarwick on Reddit: International student HSBC bank account
September 15, 2025 -

hi guys, I’m an incoming international student at Warwick and I’ve added the HSBC staff on campus session on 30th Sep to my timetable during Welcome Week.

I’m wondering, 1. can I open a bank account and receive my card immediately at this session? 2. Or is it more like a pre-check / tips session for opening a UK bank account later? 3. Do I need to install the HSBC app and apply beforehand, or can I do everything there?

Since I don't have a contactless function on my home country card, I need to set up a bank account and get a card ASAP.

Any advice on opening a bank account as an international student would be really appreciated!

r/UKPersonalFinance on Reddit: Upgraded my current account with hsbc to a student account
June 10, 2024 -

This is a long one but hey there, I've kind of got a problem (I think) whereby I've upgraded my current account with hsbc to a student account still hsbc, and have been told that they will be sending a new card and other things to do online banking - though I've already been using online banking and a card and everything because I was already with the bank.

Does that mean my details will change like my account number or will they remain the same?

Also can I use the old card (ive had with my current account) even when my new one arrives (since I forgot to updated the date to send any mail to my new adresss) so does that mean I won't be able to use my now student account properly without the new card when paying in person. Sorry if this sounds complicated, feel free to ask me to further elaborate. :)
