Upgraded my current account with hsbc to a student account
Last time I upgraded an account with HSBC (although this was a long time ago), the account number and sort code stayed the same, but they re-issued the card (with a new debit card number) just so the card could have a different pretty picture on the front that was specific to the student account. International student HSBC bank account
You can definitely open your account through the app. Going to the bank to open an account (as I have) just means you have a representative helping you work through the app. You should have ID and your address ready. Also, the app asks for a salary - just make an estimate for how much money you would put in there over the year. The card won't come immediately - it takes six business days (so, not including weekends and holidays) from the day of application to come in by mail. I just held out with cash in the meantime. Hope this helps! More on reddit.com

Opening a UK bank account as an international student (who hasn't reached yet)
On the whole you will find most UK banks will need you to have a UK address and proof of being a student. That means you need to have registered for your course; your University will probably offer to give you a letter confirming this once you have done this. But it's not impossible for an international student to gain a UK bank account before arrival - that would then not be a student specific bank account at this stage, but some banks will facilitate this, tending to be the larger ones like HSBC. For example: International Student Bank Account - HSBC UK has details on how you can get a bank account with HSBC. Apply For A UK Account | New To UK - HSBC UK has information on the type of account you might be able to get before you moved here if you're eligible. Others are available but if you want an account before you arrive then it's most likely to be with one of the big (international) outfits like HSBC, Barclays etc. However, you should check with your US-based employer whether they can manage to pay you in this way, they may not be setup to do this (you haven't explained how they are paying you at the moment.) HSBC student account overdraft
I don't know the answer. But terrible idea to have that amount of overdraft allowance if they're treating it as credit! More on reddit.com
