r/webdev on Reddit: HTML/CSS - What to create on portfolio projects?
May 14, 2019 -
I'm targeting front end web design jobs for entry level.
A lot of employers ask to see a showcase of my work, examples of projects.
What type of pages can I create?
All I can think of is to pull some pictures off google images and create a nav bar and a couple of headers, a couple columns of text, a footer and some images for a dummy page.
Does anybody have any suggestions? It would be better if I could download all the images I need off a bank so it would look professional, or if I knew how to recreate someone's website.
So how can I approach this? Any resources that would be helpful? What would employers be impressed by?
Thanks

To apply for front-end design a basic understanding of javascript is usually needed in most cases. When it comes to CSS, a preprocessor like Sass or Scss would give you advantage. Also Bootstrap is easy to learn - you get that down in a week - everything that brings you knowledge is important, in particular when it's easy to learn. If you're targetting front-end design be sure to show off your CSS skills - with animations and transitions for example. The more unique your stuff looks, the better. In most cases a default website with nothing more than the layout, a navbar and some photos isn't enough by far. If you're targetting front-end web development you have to be comfortable with at least one front-end framework like react, angular or vue. edit: You can look up “front end design portfolio“ on google to get a sense of some good portfolios! good luck!

I know that while learning something I eventually come to a "I wonder how/if I can do x" moments. If you do, too, pursue those thoughts and maybe it will lead you to something. They aren't always useful, but they do allow you to show off whatever skill.
