The problem may be a partially restricted carburetor. · As gas gets old, it turns to varnish and clogs up the passageways inside the carburetor, not allowing enough gas to get to the engine. · This condition is cumulative. Every time gas sits, the varnish builds up just a little more, like coats of paint, until eventually gas can not flow. It will not happen overnight, but the symptoms can show up over night. · The use of fuel additives, such as Sta-Bil or Sea Foam will not stop this process from happening. They will greatly slow it down, but the gas will still go bad. · When this happens, either the engine simply will not start, or it will not run without the choke on (this reduces the amount of air getting pulled into the engine, changing the fuel/air mixture), or it will run but surges. · Another issue that varnish in the carb can cause is that the varnish may not allow the float needle to seal properly against the seat, causing the flow of gas to not shut off when the bowl is full. The result will be gas overflowing the carb and running into the cylinder, and possibly out the air intake. If the gas gets into the cylinder, it will seep past the rings and down into the crankcase. This will be evidenced by your oil level being over-full and/or the oil smelling like gas. · The only 2 solutions are to either replace the carburetor or give it a good, thorough cleaning. · When removing the carb, make sure to take a good picture, or make a good drawing of where all springs and linkages are attached. This will make reassembly much easier. · Most people believe that cleaning a carb involves removing the bowl and wiping it out, then spraying some carb cleaner through it. · This is simply insufficient. · To properly clean the carb, you must remove it, disassemble it (making sure to remove all non-metal parts), and soak it in a commercial solvent for several hours. Soaking it overnight is even better. · Then clean all solvent off with a spray type carb cleaner, making sure to get lots of cleaner into every hole and passage there is. Pay special attention to the tiny holes in the bore of the carb, under the throttle plate for the carbs that have these holes. Use lots of cleaner. And make sure to wear safety goggles to avoid getting the over spray into your eyes. There will be over spray. · Dry the carb with low pressure compressed air. · When reassembling the carb, make sure to use a carb kit, when one is available for your carb. · Occasionally, even a good cleaning is not going to be sufficient, and you may end up having to replace the carb anyhow. r/smallengines on Reddit: Riding lawnmower will crank but won’t start
November 19, 2022 -

Got an 09 husqvarna yth2348 from a neighbor that hadn’t run in a couple of years. I drained the gas from the tank and the oil from the engine. Replaced the battery, carburetor, spark plugs, gas filter, oil filter, air filter. And I gave it new oil and new gas. I check the spark plugs to ensure they fire and they do. Checked the bowl uof the carburetor to make sure it was full/ getting fuel. The flywheel will turn and spins when cranked, but it just won’t start. Any tips or advise on what I might be missing? I’m stumped

I have this same mower. I’ve had problems with the push rods bending cause the sleeve pushes all the way out. Also with the battery draining and not starting. Starting fluid always seems to help. I’m not sure if a rod is bent if it’ll kick in with just one side running.

Take the plug out and clean or get a new one. Crank the engine over for a while right before you put the plug back in. This is to clear any gas/oil/water out of the cylinder. Put about a teaspoon of gas in the plug hole followed by the plug and crank it. If it kicks for a little bit after a little bit, you know it is getting a good spark so look at fuel issues. There a few other things but they are rare. 99% of the time it is fuel or spark issues. The engine will usually turn over fine with crappy compression, it may not make any power but it will usually spin, and it will pop and smoke. Timing can cause issues, but this is really only common in push mowers when the blade hit's something that stops it fast and the flywheel cracks the key because it has mass and wants to keep on spinning. Once in a while there will be a stuck valve, or one time I had one that had mud wasps build a nest in the exhaust and totally clog it up. Start with the fuel and spark. And always use premium fuel, it is a lot less likely to gum and varnish.. Also install a petcock if there is not one and when you are done turn it off and let it both cool down by running without a load for a couple of minutes and run the carb dry. This also helps a lot with junk where the card float stick's or the valve leaks a bit. When you go to start it, keep the petcock off, and turn it over, as soon as it is cranking, turn the gas on. Good luck!

Husqvarna FAQ : Troubleshooting - Engine turns over but will not start (4 stroke)
Ensure that the spark plug boot is properly secure to the spark plug. If the mower has a few seasons on the spark plug it is advised to replace the plug to ensure the engine receives adequate ignition during operation.

Short answer to my fix. To much gas in the fuel tank, gas cap vent clogged. · I had the same problem, motor would crank but would not start. Before having the problem I installed: a new spark plug; new air filter; new gas filter and changed the oil. I was low on gas so I poured what gas i had left from previous week in tank. Not much, may a 1/4 gallon. Mower started like a champ. 2 weeks later I filled the tank and mower would crank but would not start. I assumed I fouled something up with the new parts. After hours of reading and researching. Trying this and that I asked a neighbor if he new of a good small engine mechanic. Neighbor ask if he could take a look. He removed gas cap and the engine started with no problem.

How To Troubleshoot A Husqvarna Riding Mower That Won't Start - Hunker
December 31, 2009 - Failure to replace your Husqvarna's fuel filter every season may also prevent your mower's engine from starting; a dirty filter prevents the flow of gas to the carburetor. These riding mowers use an in-line fuel filter. To change it, you must access the fuel line and gently clamp the side of the line nearest the fuel tank to prevent gasoline leakage.

Have you drained the fuel and refilled with fresh fuel? Wet plugs can mean no spark or an over rich condition, as in the carb needle not seating. If you spray starter fluid and the mower starts, you have to look at fuel.

First off, there was a recall on those mowers due to leaking gas tank. For that check check on here. Now lets assume this got fixed;-) You need at least three things for the mower to start. Fuel, air, and a spark. Check for gas, clogged filters and collapsed lines. Check your carburetor, make sure your float is working right and that your needle valve is clean. Check all the lines for leaks and proper connection. If you are sure you do not have spark, then disconnect the Shut Off Wire at the Control Bracket and then check for spark at the Plug. If there is still no spark at the Plug, disconnect the Shut Off Wire at the Coil and check for spark. If you should still not have a spark, it is possible that your coil/or the ignition module is Bad. You can check and see that the Coil/Ign Module to flywheel gap is .020in. If you get spark at the Plug anytime during these checks, then a Safety Switch or Wire May be the Problem. The engine will turn over with a bad safety switch but will not fire. There should also be a blade safety switch, that you do not want to forget to check as well as the seat safety switch. To really isolate what is going on, I would disconnect the safety switches, bridge the wires. That way, you should be left with just the ignition circuit. If you now get spark, you know that it is one of the safety switches. reconnect one at a time and see which one causes the failure. Replace the safety switch. DO NOT OPERATE THE EQUIPMENT WITHOUT THE SAFETY FEATURES. Check the electrical diagram and see if that will help you further along. Good Luck and let us know how it is going.

Wendy, · Try replacing the battery terminal wires on both the ground and the positive of the battery (black and red wires) with new. Current is not always able to flow through old, deteriorated or frayed wiring. That is the only link in the chain so far that you have not replaced. · After that you may try cleaning your battery posts and terminals with a "post and terminal" cleaning tool. · Let us know if that works or if it is a different problem. · Good luck, · Frank

Why Husqvarna Riding Mower Won’t Start After Battery?
Riding mower struggles to start or makes clicking noise without engine turnover. If the mower clicks but won’t start, check battery terminals for corrosion or loose connections. Inspect the starter solenoid and ensure it receives power.
