HW Monitor is reporting every core of my CPU as 287 degrees C. Obviously this is incorrect and there would clear signs of an issue. Flames being the most tell tale sign.

It’s an old AMD FX-6100 that’s driving a Plex Server. The machine is working absolutely fine, feeding up to 4 1080p streams at once with seemingly no issues. The server is, and has been on 24/7 for almost 6 years except for the usual maintenance.

The question is does the CPU need replacing?

Also as the CPU temps are wrong and if the CPU fan fails would the wrong temp readings prevent the machine from automatically shutting down due to overheating? Now that would be a major fire hazard.

I highly doubt your CPU is broken. However, you can try finding the CPU temps using a Live Linux USB. If the Live USB reports sensible temps, it's probably a Windows problem.

Try hwinfo or coretemp. Hwmonitor is problematic IMO.

Just wondering, because I've run Cyperpunk on UltraRT and thermals sit anywhere between high 70s and mid 80s, and I can clearly feel the heat above my case if I touch it.

However, sometimes (randomly) when running not nearly as intensive games it will sit around high 80s and 90s on HWMonitor, and it is clearly not hot at whatsoever. I ran Diablo 2 resurrected and my GPU (RTX 3080) was at a comfortable 45-50, but the CPU was at high 80s, even 90 (again, not warm at all) .

I know most recommend using HWinfo, so I'm wondering if this is a common thing for HWMonitor. Thanks!

Try HWInfo64. With my 7700x + NH-D15 HWMonitor was showing over 95C while gaming, but every other tool shows below 70C.

look at hwmonitor again and see if its 1 core going that high or your whole cpu going up into the 80's. if thats the case your cooling might be an issue, whether its mounting pressure issue or your cooler itself. these are hot chips so going into the 80's during gameplay in cpu heavy games is not cause for concern. HOWEVER consistantly hitting 90c during gameplay means something is very wrong. loading a game will always make temp go up so 70-90c when loading is normal and fine. if its during gameplay thats different.

Apparently I'm getting 100C while playing but I'm really not noticing any performance dips like at all. But I don't know how to look at these technical jargon can anyone explain it to me?

Hwinfo usually the best out of all the hw monitor softwares. You can also use hwmonitor or gpu-z on the sensor tab shows cpu/gpu sensors. Now sure what cpu you're using or what cooler or what case and fan config with bios speed per fan so that's up to you to check. It may be that you are on a silent mode, probably go to your bios and switch to performance or max mode. Iq use max since the weather here is usually hot... It could also be a bios that is using high voltages you will also have to check that on your bios manufacturer.

I overclocked my AMD 8320 to 4.00 ghz and ran prime 95 for 2 hours with a maximum temp of 73 degrees on load. Later on I played planetside 2 for 40 mins & I was getting ready to hit the bed. I logged out of the game and saw something really alarming!! Current CPU temp was at 55. Which was fine becasue I just got out of the game but the max temp was reading at 161 Degrees!!

Which is impossible because the Cpu should throttle itself down and turn the PC off before anything like that would ever happen. Hell my cpu & board should be fried if it went over like that.

My questing is it normal for HWmonitor give false reading? or am I missing something!!

in my experience HWmonitor + AMD CPU = random crap that is either too high or too low. Try using AMD overdrives CPU status tab it display CPU temp as difference between current temp and maximum safe tamp so the values go in reverse however it is always correct when you're under load.

You probably had more than one HW monitoring tool running. They interfere with each other.

Hi I just upgraded from my i5 8400 to a i5 12400f and when I open hw monitor I don't see any temperatures , I only see the utilization tab under "Intel processor". Can someone explain what's happening here? I didn't have this issue with my i5 8400

What you need to do is update HWmonitor

I'll take a guess that you did not update HWMonitor since the upgrade? For monitoring software to make sense of a new CPU, it needs to be coded to do so. If you're using an old version, chances are that it just doesn't know what's what anymore.

Hey i know it's been a long time but for me updating HWMonitor wasn't helpful, i actually had to temporarly disable windows defender to get complete access to monitoring voltages, loads, temps ecc.

Remove HWMonitor as it doesn't install the required drivers to effectively communicate with the relevant ICs' microcontroller. Install HWiNFO64 .

January 18, 2012 - Not that I think you would, but please don't ever change what temperature data you display because someone thinks it is wrong, or are pressured to do so for some reason. As I write this and glance over at the HWiNFO64 Sensor Status display, the cores of my i7-2600k are usually idling at 1.6GHz, but change occasionally to the OC speed of 4.6GHz. My real CPU temp varies between 25C and 30C, while the ASUS CPU temp, that I can also see as I said, is showing 14C - 15C.
