[Sci Comm] Breeding hybrid giant clams – Mei Lin Neo
November 24, 2021 - This concept is contradicted by hybrids, which are offspring resulting from combining the qualities of two species, breeds, varieties, or genera through sexual reproduction. Over time, I’ve learnt that the species concept can be viewed as a continuum spectrum spanning from reproductive isolation with no interbreeding to unlimited interbreeding (i.e. high gene flow), rather than absolutes. Mariculture studies on the giant clams have been ongoing for decades, but studies investigating hybridisation are far and few.

How (Hybrid) Tridacna Clams are Made | Reef Builders | The Reef and Saltwater Aquarium Blog
January 23, 2020 - A recent video by Coral Clam details the process of inducing the giant clam to spawn, obviously starting first with having broodstock clams of the right size and age, and then inducing them to spawn with a specially prepared injection. There’s some guidelines as how to how long to let the small clams release sperm, how long to let the large ones release eggs, and how long to let the pairs of gametes mix for optimal fertilization success. Last week we learned that the specific hybrid crosses that result from the hybridization of giant clam species is highly dependent on which species is the mother (egg donor), and which one is the father (sperm donor).

January 14, 2020 - Also, the authors report a suspiciously strong similarity between the hybrid's shell characteristics and the characteristics of the conspecific fertilization pool that matches the maternal species. Frankly, this is what I would expect is self fertilization occurred in the hybrid treatment.
