If there’s one thing to spend money on in your grow, it’s good lighting. My rule of thumb is around 30 watts per sq ft with LEDs. The efficiency of the lights affects this, so it’s not a hard rule, but something to consider. And be sure to find true watts, not equivalent watts. The light you listed would be good for about a sq ft. Answer from sirdoogofyork on reddit.com

r/Hydroponics on Reddit: Grow Light Confusion
July 18, 2022 -

Hey all. I'm quite new to hydroponics and using grow lights. I've got a very bare bones/simple setup, but keen to expand slightly for bigger production/output.

I'm getting very confused about grow lights and what colours to use. My current grow light can switch between red/blue, white/red/blue, and just white. I've been reading forums, watching videos, watching timelapses etc and I have no idea which colour is supposed to be the best. There's so much conflicting information. Some people say red/blue is all that's needed and is more efficient while some say white led's are way better. Timelapse comparisons seem to show white led or cfl bulbs out growing red/blue by alot.

If I went with white light, would any white led light do? Could I just grab a cheap daylight led bulb and point it at the plant? Haha.

Does anyone have any insight or experience with this? Thanks heaps in advance.

Hey y'all! I'm working on some new growing setups and was wondering what grow lights yall have had good luck with. I was looking at this one from Home Depot: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Feit-Electric-2-ft-32-Watt-White-LED-3-Adjustable-Spectrum-Linkable-Plant-Grow-Light-Fixture-GLP24ADJS-32W-LED/306744759

But I'm not entirely sure what makes a "good" grow light. This is going to be in a smaller space, so I dont want something that'll fry my plants, and I cant get anything too big.

Thank you!

March 5, 2024 -

I want to make a small and simple indoor hydroponic setup. I think I'm going to use the kratky method and grow grow some leafy greens, such as green lettuce and spinach. Maybe a couple strawberry plants, too. I want to grow in a 2X4 foot area.

I have been looking at LED lighting options and am a bit overwhelmed. I tried searching online and there are a lot of different options for lighting a 2X4 foot area.

Here's what I think might be best options, based on my reading so far:

  • Panel LEDs. 1) "board" or 2) "bar" style. not the cheap blue/purple ones, but decent quality lights with samsung diodes that produce full spectrum light

  • 3) T5 light fixture and full spectrum T5 LED tubes

I think I have it narrowed down to those three options, but I'm not sure what the pros and cons of each would be, or which would be best suited to my intended use. And is full spectrum lighting the best choice for me? Any other specifications I should look for?

Looking for feedback. Was tinkering around today and made this apparatus to adjust the distance of the grow lights from the plants/tower. I’m just starting out, so only have a few tomato plants really to practice with. Based in my pics/video am I wasting time or do you feel like this might be beneficial? I had to stop before I finished the setup totally…will be adding two more slides with lights this next week when I get time. I picked up the tower used and it didn’t come with a light kit or anything, so I improvised. Thanks guys!

So I stopped by my Google home depot and picked up some high lumen LEDs. I've got a grow panel and other supplemental lights, but I'm wondering if these will help my plants grow over a wider area (thinking 4ft×4ft) for things like okra, tomatoes, cucumbers and bell peppers.

First bulb: 150w LED (uses 24w), has a brightness of 2605 lumens with light appearance of 5000K

Second bulb: 300w LED (uses 33w), has a brightness of 4000 lumens with light appearance of 3000K

I'm looking to setup a small NFT system and need some grow light strips/bars, the system will be 4 levels of 110mm pipe at about 1.2m in length, so I need 4 light bars to sit perhaps 50cm above at the highest, I'll likely be growing leafy greens and maybe some chilli plants.

This is a low budget project so I'm looking for a good balance between budget, power efficiency, and light output.

Grow lights seem to get more and more complicated the more I look into them, any help would be much appreciated. 😁

r/Hydroponics on Reddit: Grow lights question
October 31, 2024 -

So I'm trying to plant Chili using Kratky Method. My question is, can I use the Flood light LED as my grow light? I saw Grow light in our Local online store that cost around $7-8 and it has 1xUV, 1xIR, 24xWarm White(3000K), 16xCool White(5000K), and 8xRed LED. The other items was no UV and IR LED and it only said "Grow Light 4000K"

Anyway, I also saw same light but advertised as Flood light, they used the same Casing, LED model(SMD2835), wattage and the looks, The only thing the "Flood light" dont have was the IR and UV light but only cost $2-3.

On other online merchant they also have light but advertised as "Flood light" and it has "Blue Flood Light" which only emit Blue light, "Red Flood Light", "Green", "RGB", "Warm White", and "Cool White".

The "Flood light - Cool white" seems the same as "Grow Light 4000K". So what is the better choice? The "Flood light - Cool white"($2-3) or the "Grow Light 4000K"($7-8)?

However, I also like the UV and IR LED on the Grow Light. Do you think it will be better if I buy the Grow light with UV and IR then add another Flood light that only emit BLUE and another flood light that emit RED so I have better control if i want for my plants growing stage or flowering stage?

Light is essential for hydroponics and I don't find a lot of useful information. Some is just old others is from the companies selling the lights. Can someone point me into the correct direction on what I have to look out for? I am currently searching for lights for my chilli plants. But I also want to use them for salad, basil which don't need that much light. Personal I would prefer LED strips or something very low profile. Because I don't have a lot of headspace.

PS: wouldn't it be good to have a fixed posed which has all the information already collected?

I'm general light is light and plants don't care. There was a post a while ago of someone growing a cannabis plant under only green LEDs just to prove the point. Plants do react differently to different colours but it's not a big deal if you have something vaguely white. The main thing to avoid is when amazon lamps say "1000 watt equivalent" or something, it's a bullshit old measure. What matters is how much power it pulls form the wall and how well it converts that to photons. One thing that can be super cheap is outdoor floodlights, they're often priced much lower than growlights.

There are so many different lights available, and so many exaggerated claims made by sellers, it is hard to see just what will work vs what is a load of rubbish. I am an EE who has done some evaluations of different LED modules, mostly bought from AliExpress, and I now have some experience with what works. Here are some thoughts: You can use either white light modules, or the blue/red light modules, both seem reasonably effective. In a greenhouse, about 150 watts per square metre seems about right. There is a fair bit of variability in this though, you will get a photoperiodic response with less, and you will get stronger growth from light-loving plants with more. They all run hot, and fan cooling seems the best way to go. If they get too hot, they die. Many sellers exaggerate the power/performance of their products. Even some otherwise good modules. I have some here that were sold as 50W and 100W respectively, and when I tested them they were drawing 30W and 60W. Still good for seedlings. When questioned, the seller made wankey words about 'apparent power'. The modules that have LEDs and drivers on board are great because I can wire them up to the electric mains directly, but you need to know what you are doing, its no task for the electrically-unskilled.

r/Hydroponics on Reddit: 3D Printed Hydroponic Tower with 6 Grow Lights and an Auto Pollination System
December 17, 2025 -

Hi all. I randomly stumbled across a really cool 3D model I found on printables.

https://www.printables.com/model/882115-modular-hydroponics-tower-w-grow-lights

It looked like a fun side project so I gave it a go. I ended up adding my own “pollination system” consisting of two 12v vibrating motors and a 12v oscillating fan. They are controlled by two 5V relays and a Pi Pico W which hosts api endpoints for control.

I made a dashboard to interact with all my devices so I can set specific intervals 24/7 or only while my LEDs are on. For the LED power I just used TP Link Kasa outlets because they are super easy to control with python. I plan to 3d print a mount for the fan so it’s a bit farther away and blowing into the back wall to hopefully cover more area. Also currently printing support I can attach to the tower for fruits and veggies to hold on to.

I don’t know if this will actually work as I’m just getting started but any pointers or suggestions are welcome!

Just finished mine as well; thank you for sharing! 🌱 I was originally going to print the one by Luitzor you made, u/jewbasaur , but myriad delays trying to fine tune PETG quality + IKEA discontinuing the Muskot made me pivot. I used the Upgraded Modular Hydroponics Tower by Conr8, Bucket mount by ExpendibleMan (on a Lowe's 5 gallon bucket), No Support 2 inch Netcups by Kevin_8878, and stainless steal screws w/ neoprene washers. I currently have the GHodec Grow Light (200W) mounted on the top cap, EcoPlus 290 GPH Submersible Water Pump (recommended by Conr8), and added HiTauing Aquarium Heater (we keep our thermostat at 65º during winter...although the room I'm growing in is typically 55-60º). Trying to keep reservoir at 70º (based on advice from this r/Hydroponics post ) Working on a pH between 5.5 - 6.5 (based on Epic Gardening & Whitepepper Farms Homestead videos, and other Reddit posts; starting with leafy greens and herbs) Coated PETG pieces in food grade resin (to be extra safe; brushed on as well) Currently using an Eve Energy Strip + Home app to automate cycles (...although this is overkill as my grow lights have a built in timer and the water heater has temperature settings + auto-shutoff if water levels get too low; might switch to a Meross smart plug to control pump). Finally finished constructing, drying resin and silicone (for lid), and testing (for leaks; my wife's biggest concern). Planted in rock wool 4 days ago; lettuce, mustard greens, and watercress have germinated. SO looking forward to watching it grow!

I use that same tower, albeit with less plants and more spacers. Works great. Roots from things like basil or parsley can be pretty gnarly in it.

Hey, I'm interested in doing indoor growing, and I don't know what a good LED is for this. My research turned up that you want to replicate the light spectrum and heat produced from the sun.

I have a flashlight that has a nice brightness and certainly produces heat, so I found the chip information. I'm wondering if someone here with more knowledge can look at the chip output specs and let me know if this is satisfactory to provide plants with adequate light.

I realize I am way over my head here, so I'm reaching out for advice!

I've built a custom shelving unit for growing simple plants in kratky containers. Each shelf is about 12" by 16", and I can adjust the height by quite a bit, and can remove units to get extra height. Proper reflectors are going to be installed later, after I get everything together.

So I've got a surface area of about 1.5 square feet for each shelf, and I want to light each one individually. Given the small surface area, I figure something like the 12W SunBlaster would work fine. I've picked up one but I want to compare it against something I can make myself to see if I can get good enough performance, but less cost than the 50-55$ for each SunBlaster.

Thing is, so far I've only been finding guides for building stuff out of huge, inefficient chips, or lights that are too large or overpowered. Is there a DIY LED light I can make for under 50$ that would perform about as well as the SunBlaster?

Thanks!

This is an experiment to build a grow light using 3.3v LEDs managed by an Arduino. It has a 36 watt power supply, eight nodes with 33 LEDs on each node for a total of 264. Each node consists of 11 parallel chains of 3 LEDs that are in series.

So far it’s been quite tedious and my selection of LED color may not have been optimal. I am however excited to finish the project and see how well it works :)

So I’m aware that grow lights should be on 10-16 hours of the day depending on the plants you’re growing, but I am having a hard time finding out if it matters which 10-16 hours of the day they are. I was hoping I could use this electricity at non peak hours (10pm-7am in my state) to save money. Is that okay or do I need to sync up closer to the literal day time?

If your controlling the environment then your the decider . Anytime during the day or night you want is fine just make sure the area is dark during dark times. (No light bleed from outside sources if your "night time" is during the actual day light hours )

So you have two answers, but I will give you the actual science answer!!! For a given plant, you need to know the Daily Light Integral (DLI). This gives you a number of total photons that the plant needs to receive. Next you need to know the PPFD of your light. This is the photon density based on how close the light is and the spread of the light. You source this from the lamp manufacturer... you need to really pay attention to the distance the numbers are measured from. You will then use these two numbers to know how many hours your plant really wants. So if you're trying to use a shop light... you have SUPER LOW PPFD... so you need many many more hours. If you're using a top of the line grow light, it might put out too high a PPFD and can actually burn the plant - so you have to know your plants. Example - with a 400 PPFD grow lamp, a tomato plant will need 16 hours if the light is just 12 inches away. Move the same lamp up 4 inches and you need to add an hour or two. This is just a quick explanation of the science behind it... yes, you can just use your gut and testing... but that will take a ton of time. Using the numbers will give you a VERY exact starting point. Read more here. NOTE - do not ever use lux, lumens, etc... those are numbers for human eyeballs and movie theaters, etc!!!

r/Hydroponics on Reddit: Tower Garden grow light recommendations?
September 29, 2025 -

Hi friends!

My roomie and I were recently able to find this Tower Garden on marketplace for a very good price. We got it immediately and are so excited to have it set up :)

Initially, we were going to use it outside for a little while until it starts getting too cold. We live in Charlotte, NC and figured we’d have a little time left. However, after consideration we decided to set it up inside so we wouldn’t have to move it for winter.

In the photo, you can already tell the difference between the window facing side of the tower, vs. the other. We definitely need a light, and I want to get her one, but can’t afford the Tower Garden brand…. We may as well get a new off brand hydroponic system from Amazon for the prices listed…. lol. The tower is approximately 70” tall.

Do you guys have any recommendations for a light I could use instead? I don’t mind if it is a floor standing light that needs moving daily.

We do have two younger cats as well, so I’d prefer a base that is not a “tripod” stand if possible…

Additionally, I’d be fine with light options that would need to mount to the wall, too!

Thanks for your help guys!!
