Hi Robyn,
Thanks for posting in our forum. We will try our best to provide support for you.
To better address this behavior, could you please share the following information?
- Your Office version. Please click PowerPoint>About Microsoft PowerPoint to check it.
- Regarding the hyperlink, did you create it by clicking Insert Hyperlink>This document>select a slide you want to link to?
- Does this behavior persist if you edit it to link to other slide?
- Please create a new presentation to test whether this behavior occurs with all the files.
- Did PowerPoint work properly previously? If so, did you make any changes like installing or updating some software?
Regards,
Zixuan
Hello Zixuan
I have PowerPoint Version 16.16.2
Hyperlink is something I've used many times in many presentations. I did, however, go through the steps you suggested. Nothing has worked. Safari Version 12 was installed last week, I don't know if that affected anything. I am on Sierra 10.13.6.
Thank you.
Hi! I've been making PowerPoints for my students to use during home learning, but exporting them as PDFs to make sure formatting and fonts stay the same regardless of their devices.
When I was making the PPT files and exporting at work on my PC, the hyperlinks were fine and were still usable on the PDF files.
However, now that I am working from home due to lockdown, I only have access to my personal Macbook. When I export the new PPT files to PDF, the hyperlinks are no longer clickable. Am I missing something? Is this a Mac thing? Anyone know a way around it?
Thank you!
Hyperlink won't work on PowerPoint slide
Hyperlinks in Powerpoint not working on Mac but fine on PC

Unable to get Hyperlink on Mac in presentation mode to work...it shows as a hyperlink but clicking on it, in presentation mode, nothing happens. Links is correct.

Hi Robyn,
Thanks for your update.
We test with the same Office version(16.16.2) and OS version(10.13.6). And it works fine in our end. It should not be related to Safari as you link to other slide in the presentation rather than a web page.
As it works fine in our end, we would like to suggest you open your Mac in safe mode first and launch PowerPoint to see the outcome.

If the link still doesn't work in safe mode, could you please follow the article below to completely uninstall Office 2016 for Mac and reinstall it to see if it helps?

I doubt the hyperlink conversion to HTML entities is the cause of this, but I can't exactly duplicate your results. It could because you're using an Insider version, which does have more bugs than final releases.
If I place a video file that is playable in PowerPoint, it plays equally well whether the hyperlink has spaces or %20 entities. After saving and reopening, I do have to go through the whole sandbox-caused granting of permissions, but then it plays.
If I place a video that PowerPoint can't play, then try to play it, it will try to convert the file, then say that it can't play it. After closing and re-opening, clicking on that file displays a message that it can't play the file, without any of the granting permission dialogs.
The Windows comparison is not especially helpful, since Windows can play video formats that the Mac version can't and the Windows version isn't sandboxed.
I recommend that you click on the small smiley-face icon in the upper right corner of the program window and choose Tell Us What Can Be Better. Rather than include your pet theory, just describe what does and doesn't happen in detail, so they can reproduce it with 16.25 and determine the true cause.
Thanks John. I'll do that.
However, don't be so dismissive of "pet theories". They can often provide useful insights.
Also, although I'm using an insider version, I had other users here on standard versions test this out. Same outcome, so doesn't appear to be insider version-specific.
This is one of the missing features in Mac PowerPoint that's available to the Windows version.
PPT/Mac uses the MacOS' built in print to PDF function, which does nothing to preserve links. If you have the full Adobe Acrobat software, it *might* do a better job of converting PPT's links to PDF; I don't have it, so can't test. If someone else here has a copy and knows the answer, please speak up. Thanks in advance.
Hi AndrewLimProperty:
You are welcome to post in our forum.
I have tested on my side (insert the link to text in different slides), and the links work well in the PDF. To troubleshoot the issue, I would like to collect more information. My Office version 16.57, I cannot reproduce this issue.
Please check your Powerpoint version and make sure your copy of Office will always be up to date with the latest version. You can reference this article:Update Office for Mac automatically - Office Support (microsoft.com).
If the problem persists, please try running Office by starting up your Mac in safe modeto see the result. This can help us check whether issues you are experiencing are caused by software that loads as your Mac starts up.
We appreciate your understanding that sometimes the initial suggestions may not resolve the problem very soon. However, we can work together to narrow down and resolve the situation. So, Please kindly provide more information below to let us work further:
- Screenshot of the version information of the Powerpoint you are using.
- Does it happen in other presentations?
Hope this will help you.

Hyperlinks can't contain spaces, those must be substituted by %20. Write the link in the form: Task%20Achievement/How%20to%20write%20a%20letter.pptx
I do not have a same environment as yours, but on my Mac environment, the path shown on your image seems to be correct.
The linked "Presentation 2.pptx" as following image shown, could be opened successfully.

Please try a full file path for a test.
Right-click the file (How to write a Letter) in Finder > Get Info > Copy the path of your file, which starts from "Users". Please also ensuer your current account has read and write permission to this file.
Then paste the path into Address bar, and add "file:///" at the beginning of the path like the following image.

If a full path does not work, please move your files to other location to have a check.
Hi Bart,
You should consider yourself lucky. You are the first person to report a problem of this nature. Not everyone gets such luck! So you will get to explore the many possibilities that might or might not cure this issue.
Let's start with a few easy things to check.
- Have you installed the updates available for Office? To check this, while your computer has a live internet connection, on the PowerPoint Help menu choose Check for Updates.
- Have you installed the Mac OS updates available? To check this, while your computer has a live internet connection, click on the Apple menu (top left corner of the screen) and choose Software Update.

A PowerPoint file is a bunch of text files combined with media files. You can disassemble a PowerPoint file by changing the file extension from (.pptx) to (.zip) and then double-clicking on the zip file (I suggest doing this on a copy, not the original). Then navigate the resulting folder.
The message indicates that PowerPoint is unable to read one or more items contained within the PowerPoint presentation file. This is almost certainly caused by one of two conditions:
PowerPoint is being blocked by permissions from accessing the contents of the presentation file.
or
An invalid character such as a slash / has been introduced into the file name, a containing folder, or the name of the startup volume.
Given the above, you'll want to save yourself trouble by putting all the files you INTEND to link into the same folder as the PPT file first, THEN do the links. And be sure to save the PPT to that folder once BEFORE starting to make the links.
Hi Steve,
You're correct on this point, as I had (luckily) already followed this exact process when setting up the files and then creating the hyperlinks. Otherwise they may not work if they are linked from elsewhere, and files are added to the same folder after the fact.
OS X is a different operating system and uses different characters for the path separator. In Windows, you use the backslash (**) while OS X uses the forward slash (/), or in older versions the colon (:**). In addition, OS X disk drives use names (Macintosh HD) instead of letters (C:).
You could try putting all your referenced files on a web server, then the standard internet protocols will apply and your links will work on both platforms.
Hi Jim,
unfortunately, a few month are gone but this bug still isn't fixed yet.
I am quite angy, that a super-basic feature still has to be discussed in the 3rd decade of Powerpoint.
Do you have a definition of "soon"?
Hi Jim,
Any new regarding an update to solve this problem? I just made all the updates available for my office package, however this problem keeps happening.
Thank you,
Natalia.
