Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Hypothyroidism occurs when your thyroid gland fails to produce sufficient thyroid hormones, essential for regulating metabolism, energy levels, and many bodily functions.

The most common cause is Hashimoto's thyroiditis, an autoimmune disorder where your immune system attacks the thyroid. Other causes may include iodine deficiency, certain medications, or treatments like radiation therapy. If left untreated, hypothyroidism can lead to complications such as heart disease, depression, and infertility.

You might begin to feel better within a few weeks of starting medication, typically levothyroxine, though it can take several months to fully stabilize your hormone levels. It is crucial to take your medication as prescribed and on an empty stomach to enhance absorption.

To manage your symptoms effectively, avoid foods like soy, raw cruciferous vegetables, gluten, and processed foods, as they can interfere with thyroid function or medication absorption. Incorporating regular exercise, a balanced diet, and stress management techniques is also beneficial.

Initially, your thyroid levels should be checked every six to eight weeks to adjust the dosage. Once stabilized, an annual check-up is usually sufficient. Continuous monitoring and lifestyle adjustments will help manage hypothyroidism effectively.

I hope this information helps you, and please reach out if you have any doubts.

Thank you.

The treatment for hypothyroidism is medicine to replace the hormone that your own thyroid can no longer make. About 6 to 8 weeks after you start taking the medicine, you will get a blood test to check your thyroid hormone level.

Has anyone treated their hypothyroidism through lifestyle and diet changes?
There isn't a cure for hypothyroidism. It is a condition that has to be managed with doctor prescribed medicine. Lifestyle changes and reducing stress can help with symptoms and help medication work better. But the key component is medication. More on reddit.com

Just starting treatment for hypothyroidism

I started on 50mcg tirosint w a TSH of 5. I started feeling better within a few days, quickly dropped water weight/puffiness. I’ve been on it for like 3 weeks now and I notice less joint pain, more energy, etc. I did gain a few lbs over the summer but I was already losing that weight before starting levo. I think any weight gained from hashimoto's was just water retention.

Anyways don’t be nervous! You will feel better soon

Does medication actually help?
YES! It makes you feel much better. A very small percentage are very vocal about their negative experiences. Many complaints are also hypothyroidism symptoms. Without my daily dose, I can't concentrate, I am fatigued, I ache, and I have insomnia. With the pull I'm tired. More on reddit.com

May 15, 2021 - The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force concludes that there is insufficient evidence to assess the balance of benefits and harms of screening for thyroid dysfunction in nonpregnant, asymptomatic adults.13 Consider targeted screening at initial diagnosis or medication initiation in patients with Down syndrome, Turner syndrome, subtotal thyroidectomy, type 1 diabetes, autoimmune adrenal insufficiency (Addison disease), radioiodine treatment, radiation therapy of the neck, and use of medications such as amiodarone, lithium, interferons, and rifampin.2,3 Other medications that may prompt screening include tyrosine kinase inhibitors, phenobarbital, interleukin-2, and immune checkpoint inhibitors.3,14 · TSH elevation indicates hypothyroidism.

Many factors, including your family history, your child’s physical exam, the degree of hypothyroidism in your baby at the time of diagnosis, and the course of treatment over the first two to three years of life, will help your child's physician determine if the cause is hereditary (runs in your family), and if life-long therapy is required.

Hypothyroidism: Background, Pathophysiology, Etiology
Most patients initially present with euthyroidism but later develop hypothyroidism as normal thyroid tissue is replaced. ESR levels are often normal, but high concentrations of anti-TPO antibodies are frequently present (~67% of patients). Biopsy provides definitive diagnosis, and treatment is often surgical, although some studies have shown that early treatment with glucocorticoids, methotrexate, or tamoxifen may be beneficial.
