Which Linux desktop environment is better for older computers? LXDE, Xfce, Openbox, or other?
Openbox is the lightest, LXDE is a heavily modified openbox, and Xfce is a little heavier in usage, but all 3 could potentially work depending on your hardware. More on reddit.com

In the installations with Mate desktop, IceWM and Fluxbox file managers run normally and can be switched without logging out and signing back in. Wallpaper is not affected. I tried uninstalling Thunar unsuccessfully. Is there a way to make Xfce compatible with IceWM/Fluxbox? More on antixforum.com

It's a fast, stable windowmanager. The thing >>I don't like is that the menu has to be configured all by yourself, >>because ICEWM doesn't import debian-menu like xfce. But if you only need >>to run firefox, you can easaly autostart it and there are also a lot of >>menueditor's for icewm!!!

Setup xfce to use icewm as window manager? - Linux Mint Forums
February 15, 2017 - It's available in Synaptic Package Manager. Install it, and any recommended files. Probably also it would be good to install the icewm-themes package. Once installed, reboot, and (depending on your login theme), at the login window, click the Gear icon (or similar), to choose between xfce and icewm.

When people say xfce is lightweight, what does that mean? - Linux Mint Forums
... It's more than allegedly heavier than it used to be, it definitely is. Also it's a full desktop environment, not just a WM. My old POS netbook runs Antix now because of how bloated Xfce has become compared to before. I use the iceWM window manager on it, and yes its genuinely light, about 150Mb after booting.

I have run xfce in the same user space with the following wms and experienced no problems (that I can recall). dwm openbox i3wm bspwm spectrm hlwm fluxbox iceWM jwm FWIW, Desktop Environments (DEs) tend to be more prone to overlap and causing each other grief (although it can be manageable).

Selecting a window manager/desktop environment in Linux
Of course, such a machine CANNOT support a desktop. It cannot even support XFCE4. So I installed my favorite choice out of all of the "barebones" window managers - ICEWM. As with XFCE4, I first needed a basic XWindows system installed (Debian package "x-window-system-core").

December 9, 2020 - GNOME adds fluency to work with text as it understands the hyperlinks and email addresses, which redirects to the corresponding application to open. Could you consider using IceWM as the default Window Manager, as it is very lightweight, but is more themable than Openbox, and is using GTK 1 as the toolkit. ... LXDE, LXQT, XFCE i dont want any of these most used ones.

In light of (not so recent) events. I have decided to switch from using xfce to a different alternative. (One without CSDs) I personally don't like mate, and xfce-classic isnt even in alpha stage yet, so what did I choose? I chose IceWM.

Oh please... I use Linux Lite with the XFCE on an old HP Pressario tower and it works just fine. People are always trying to find fault with things just to complain. It's 2023. XFCE can't stay as "light" as when it first began. It's just a fact of life.

It could be that the combination of features with Xfce and alternative window managers have conflicts. Xfce is a desktop environment, but it does have a default window manager β it is xfwm4 β but it could be changed to metacity, kwm, icewm, fluxbox, openbox, etc.
