Buying a used Mac - Anyway to confirm if previous owner actually logged out of iCloud/Find my Mac, etc.
I don’t know if there are any recent changes, but although I detest this web site it has 3 things to check before purchase (and how). https://www.quora.com/How-do-I-check-whether-a-used-Macbook-Pro-has-iCloud-lock-or-not-given-that-Apple-removed-its-iCloud-Activation-Lock-website From thw link: If you haven’t bought it yet, you should enquire about three things: Has a firmware password been set? Was the internal disk encrypted with FileVault? Is "Find My Mac" still active on the computer? Firmware password A firmware password prevents the computer from booting up other volumes than the defined startup disk. When a firmware password is set, you can't boot into the recovery partition (to wipe the internal disk and reinstall the operating system) or an external disk/thumb drive or CD/DVD drive. For all MacBook Pro built since 2011, you need to visit an Apple Retail Store or an Apple Authorised Service Provider to reset a firmware password, and they will ask you for a proof of purchase first. So if the MacBook Pro is recent and a firmware password has been set, you have to ask the owner to remove it like this: Boot into the recovery partition by pressing ⌘ + R Enter the firmware password to proceed On the menu above the Recovery window, click on "Utilities" then choose "Firmware Password Utility" Click "Turn OFF Firmware Password" Enter the password a last time If the owner does not know or remember this password, you should ask him/her to go to an Apple Store or Authorised Service Provider with the proof of purchase. If he/she’s not willing to do that, don’t buy this used MacBook Pro. FileVault encryption: Encrypting the internal disk with FileVault has the following benefits: It prevents anyone from accessing the data when the Mac boots from any other disk (incl. recovery partition) The password of at least 1 user account is required to boot the computer You can't reset an administrator password from the recovery partition If you were to decide to wipe the internal hard drive with FileVault still active, you'd need to know the encryption key, which the previous owner might not know or want to communicate. So if FileVault was active on the used MacBook Pro, you should ask its owner to: Launch "System Preferences" Open the "Security & Privacy" pane Click on the "FileVault" tab Click on the padlock and enter the user account password (provided that it's an administrator account) Click on "Turn Off FileVault" Find My Mac If the previous owner activated "Find My Mac" and his user account remained active and signed into iCloud, then he/she could theoretically remotely lock or erase the computer. The former is actually similar to setting a firmware password, except that it’s done via iCloud. When the computer is erased, then it loses any connection with iCloud and is basically reset to factory settings. Since there is no Activation Lock for OS X/macOS, you could then start configuring the MacBook Pro like a new one. Especially if you buy the used MacBook Pro online (via Ebay for instance), you should ask the owner to turn off "Find My Mac" and sign out of iCloud: Launch "System Preferences" Open the "iCloud" pane Un-tick "Find My Mac" Click on "Sign Out" More on reddit.com
