I’ve been using it for a couple of years now. I was a 14 year+ Gmail (G Suite Legacy free edition) user with my own domain name. I didn’t use it for anything except for email with the custom domain. In 2022 Google wanted to close this service and move users to a paid business suite. I figured that i was paying for iCloud+ anyway and iCloud mail also supported custom domains, so I moved all my email to iCloud and it’s been fine. One thing I would change is the ability to allow additional email addresses to have their own mailbox instead of being an alias of the the primary, but I generally only use the one email address anyway so it’s not a dealbreaker for me. PS it seems Google backtracked and allowed personal users to keep their service, but it’s too late for me now as I closed it. More on reddit.com

Hi everyone! I’m considering leaving Gmail and switching entirely to iCloud Mail. I’m fully integrated into the Apple ecosystem, so the idea of a more seamless experience is appealing. Plus, I’m interested in the potential privacy benefits compared to Google.
Has anyone here made this switch? How has your experience been with iCloud Mail in terms of reliability, spam filtering, and overall email management compared to Gmail?

There are a few posts here about it, but the biggest issue I had was Apple's silent filtering. I'm not sure if it is still an issue, but 1-2 years ago when I tried it, I found out I missed a couple of emails from legit businesses. They never went to my junk or deleted folder, they were never delivered. I switched to a paid Microsoft Exchange Online plan around that time and haven't had issues. I have control over my own quarantine. I'm a tech guy though, so that might not be for everyone.

I am in pretty much the same situation as you, only a few steps ahead I suppose. I was a PC/Android user since dinosaurs roamed the earth. A little over a year ago, on a whim, I got an iPad. Then an iPhone - then an Apple Watch - then a MacBook, HomePod, and even an Apple TV. I also realized how deep into the eco system I was and decided I would just roll with it. I technically still HAVE my gmail account - but I can't remember the last time I checked it. I have used iCloud as my main email for a few months now and I have had no issues. But I should mention that others HAVE had issues. All I can say is that for me, it's been great! So I would encourage you to go for it!

I opened an iCloud account 4 months ago when my main Gmail account suddenly stopped allowing me to log in. It asks for a phone number to send me a veririfcation code, which never comes. Although I can still send/receive email on it, I cannot log in to change settings etc. It was my most important account so I decided to try iCloud as I would likely have more control when there are issues. I like iCloud so far. I would like to have the ability for multiple accounts (each with its own mailbox) or/and allow smart mailboxes on iOS which would go a long way to solve the problem. If only one account is allowed, as now, then a few more aliases should be supported as well as Smart Mailboxes on iOS. Whet annoys me about iCloud Mail and a few other Apple Apps like the new Password App, is they could be the best in their class with very little extra effort, yet Apple is happy to stop short and often not offer a few items that users regard as essential.

UPDATE: I’ve created an iCloud account after great feedback here, and I’m in the process of updating my email to some services. Thanks for all the help everyone.
For context, I’ve only ever used Gmail, and when I first made my primary email account I was using the same password for everything. Now that I use a password manager and 2FA, I want to separate that Gmail account and use it for social media, random sites, etc.
The issue is my name is common, and I’m also out of making more Gmail accounts associated with my phone number. Therefore, iCloud Mail is what I seem to gear towards as my plan, as I doubt anyone would have the exact same name as me when I include my middle name (despite that someone does on Gmail).
Can I trust iCloud Mail when it comes to sensitive data as that?
Ps. I asked a similar question a few days ago regarding it being good for “professional” purposes and business-related purposes isn’t what I meant. I understand how using a custom domain is necessary for businesses, but I’m not using this as a business email.
TL;DR: I’m changing email services for specific sites and services and want to know if I can trust it. I don’t think I require a custom domain and it’s simply to separate random shit from more important things. Side note, I don’t care about using two mail apps (ie. I don’t need my Gmail connected to iCloud Mail if it isn’t necessary).

It’s one of the major mail services, and the data protection is no better or worse than any other of the big tech companies. However, I’d consider a custom domain. Yes, there’s additional cost for the domain registration, but it allows your actual email address to be independent of the mail provider. So something happens and you leave iCloud, you can update the MX records for the domain to point to a new mail provider that supports custom domains and after just a brief interruption you have your same email address up and running again.

I use iCloud for much of my email. Zero problems. One thing I do like about iCloud mail is the "hide my email" option when registering on websites. A unique email address will be created which you can use just for that website, or any other additional websites, and your actual email address is always hidden. All the email goes straight to my regular email address. If a website is becoming an irritant with never-ending barrage of emails, spam, etc. I simply go to my hide-my-email preferences and disable that email address and it all disappears. Just my 2-cents.

January 1, 2025 - I use both. But, if I were to give up one (which I’ve almost done just through lack of use), it would be Gmail. The main thing I love about iCloud mail is the Hide my email feature. Nobody gets my email and it’s great!! You’d be surprised the random routes that spam makes its way to you.
