I installed the smaller version of the IKEA Hemnes about 2 years ago. Still looks new. The sink top feels great and cleans nicely since it is all porcelain. Didn’t care for the drawer pulls but those are easy to replace. My wife loves the large drawers. The biggest trouble we had with it is that the plumbing for the drain is very unique (needed for the large drawers) and can be difficult to retrofit into existing drains. We had to make many trips the hardware stores to find the right combo of couplers and washers to make it water tight. I will admit we also used a large amount of putty as well. I also worry about replacement parts since they are very unique. But we still love the sink and has made my wife very happy. Answer from neebick on reddit.com

Bathroom vanity experiences
I have a Godmorgen vanity in dark brown that was installed in like, 2014? Ikea sinktop as well. It’s held up great. It’s not wood, I don’t think! I initially bought the legs, but changed my mind and its floating. We installed it by putting additional wood board on top of the drywall so we could get support from studs. More on reddit.com

Using Sektion cabinets as bathroom vanity
They handle the wet-ish environment of a kitchen, no reason they wouldn't hold up in a bathroom. If you're going to use a 30" or 36" standard cabinet for the sink, and you're able to keep all of the plumbing in the back 1/3 of the cabinet, IKEA makes shallow drawers that can be installed in standard depth cabinets (all of the plumbing would be behind the drawers). You could do drawers on the bottom 2/3 of the cabinet and a dummy panel on the top 1/3 where the sink is. More on reddit.com

Cutting down kitchen cabinets to bathroom depth
If you are not planning to use the rear brackets to support the cabinet on a rail or directly into the wall structure, you can certainly cut a 24" deep cabinet shorter to 21" but you'll need a table saw or track saw to cut a new slot for your back board. You could possibly use the cut off portion as a template to guide you. I would recommend that you support your cabinet from underneath on 4 euro-style adjustable feet attached to the bottom of the cabinet. Don't bother with the Ikea Sektion cabinet legs. Alternatively, you could look at the 14 3/4" shallow Sektion base cabinets, and stand them 7" away from the rear wall, but be sure to secure it directly to the floor or support them by attaching them directly to the wall. Unfortunately that may have some consequences for sink depth, and you will only be able to use the shallow Maximera drawers. More on reddit.com

r/HomeImprovement on Reddit: Ikea bathroom vanity - durable over the long term?
January 31, 2018 -

I'm looking into slowly updating my 1957 blue bathroom in my home. One thing I'd like to get out of there ASAP is the old, original vanity with blue sink. (Half of the vanity underneath is actually a hamper, so it doesn't have great storage. It's also been painted over multiple times.)

We have a large vanity space, around 51" or so. I am exploring options to replace the vanity, but vanities of this size (mostly looking at 48" for price points) are quite expensive ($1,000+).

Has anyone installed an Ikea vanity at least 2+ years ago, and can speak to the results of how well it holds up? I worry about the quality, especially because our bathroom doesn't currently have a fan/vent, and the window is also original to the home so there is a lot of moisture that collects there (no screen, and we have cats, so we can't really leave it open more than a tiny crack). I am not sure if the fiberboard of the Ikea vanity would hold up well in this type of environment. We want to install a fan long term, but can't afford to do so right now.

For reference, I'm considering an Ikea vanity such as this one, vs. a vanity from Lowes (which is made of real wood & "wood veneer construction"). Thanks for any input.

are you my twin from another dimension? We actually had a veneer vanity from Lowes for a few years. It did not hold up well and we tossed it at the 6 year mark. chips and chunks missing. hardware that wouldnt stay together. garbage for the price we paid. we replaced it about a year ago with a similar design from ikea to what you linked. ours is 48" but just has 2 long drawers instead of 4 small ones. So far it has withstood the abuse from 3 children and 2 adults. At first i thought the no back legs thing was weird, but it worked very well since you dont have to contend with the floor trim. The drawers are long in my set, so they can seem a little iffy when you open with one drawer pull instead of two. But otherwise the drawers are fairly solid. Comes with all the hardware and pipes. luckily it also comes with a flexible trap piece, since it didnt line up great with the pipes in the space we had. My only real complaint with it is the drain plunger is cheap and doesnt give much clearance for the water to drain. its either open or closed. no inbetween. it does its job so i cant complain much. My bathroom seem similar to yours as well. No vent, just 1 small window that no one ever seems to open when they shower. Exterior on the wood is thick. feels nice and sturdy. no issues with warping or swelling of any kind. Overall very happy. will buy again when it comes time.

i'm trying to replace an existing bathroom vanity with a new one. For anyone whose purchased vanities from IKEA before, how has yours held up & how are the ones at IKEA compared to the ones they sell at Home Depot and Lowes? Also:

  1. i was at IKEA the other day and noticed that their sinks have only one pre-drilled hole for the faucet. Is it possible to drill additional holes and install a wide spread or 4" faucet?

  2. does this vanity comes with a toe kit/space at the bottom?

I did not see anything on the website.

We purchased this vanity about 6 months ago. I love it. It was the only option we could find for our space and budget. I am thrilled to have a solid wood vanity that will last a long time. I love the Odensvik sink we put on the top. Having the open space under the vanity seemed a bit odd at first, but I like it. If we were to have a broken pipe or water overflow from the tub or toilet, it won't damage the base of the vanity. We had a vanity in a laundry room that was ruined when the washer overflowed. Water ran under the vanity, was soaked up by the particle board base, and it went moldy. I've lived in over 20 houses and seen more than my fair share of water damaged bathroom vanities. Most vanities that you will find at big box stores are made with particle board and MDF. Neither do well with water. After gutting half of our bathroom because of water damage, I was not keen on putting in something that would not last. I can't speak with any authority on drilling holes in ceramic, but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't work. I didn't really care for the faucet choices at IKEA, but decided I didn't want to try to make something else work. We have the Dalskar, and it works well, plus it's easy to clean.
