Wasted space is about 1/3rd of the drawer but you can use that for overflow bins/bags and less used parts. Just stuff them behind the trays in the front. I'll list you some additional downsides since you asked, but just so you know, the upsides far outweigh the downsides for me. Overall quality is good but the drawer floor is weak and may come semi loose from the bracket/need fixing after some time. This may not happen with LEGO though since it's not very heavy. Opening and closing the drawers moves everything inside back and forth (not a problem if you stuff the drawer full). You need additional trays/diviers on the inside which drives up the cost; if you want a perfect fit you'll have to get official IKEA ones or make them yourself which either way costs quite a bit. They aren't very suitable for huge amounts of very large parts (like huge plates and lots and lots of 2x something bricks) since that'll fill up the drawers really quickly. I have separate Iris Ohyama units for these big pieces. Again this is only a problem if you have a serious lot of them. You will run out of storage space as your collection grows (but this is not exclusive to any specific storage solution). But here are the upsides: Relatively affordable. Shallow drawers (this is a good thing for LEGO since you generally don't want to use deep bins, and also allows for more drawers in the same unit). Stackable. Smooth opening and closing. You don't HAVE to make a perfect fit with the trays and boxes that you put inside; almost anything that isn't too high will fit and you can mix & match containers. They look super clean. I have yet to see or hear about a superior alternative. Hope this helped. Ask away if you have any questions. Answer from TheParttender on reddit.com

ALEX drawer unit, white, 141/8x271/2" - IKEA
1 week ago - ALEX drawer unit, white, 141/8x271/2" A clean look that’s easy to like and mix with other styles, either supporting a desk or standing alone. The back is finished so you can place it in the middle of the room – all sides are just as beautiful.

Why does everyone go for the typical “two ALEX drawers + tabletop” desk setup?
For me it's because 10 drawers are more useful than 5. Solid, no wiggling. More on reddit.com

Are there specific inserts for the Alex drawers to organize things I put inside? I searched the Ikea site but couldn't find anything.
A youtuber came up with a pretty decent solution just a few days back. You need to have a 3d printer and you can customize as you need https://youtu.be/VcB30EIcUMY?si=5ErVB26RbZjQQLfy More on reddit.com

r/LegoStorage on Reddit: What are the largest drawbacks/negatives with IKEA Alex drawers?
December 30, 2022 -

Looking to upgrade my storage system to include 2 of the wide Alex cabinets, but I have seen some complaints about the drawer extension wasting about 5". Any other major issues people have run into with them? Any drawer cabinets people like more than them? Any good ideas for how to utilize the "wasted space" (is it that big of a deal when you have removable trays)?

imho they are the worst drawers possible. 20% of objects will get rolled back and fall out the rear end of each drawer. thus you will not use them because they are unfairhful to their purpose as a drawer.

r/ikeaPCstations on Reddit: Why does everyone go for the typical “two ALEX drawers + tabletop” desk setup?
June 19, 2025 -

I’ve always wondered why so many setups use the ALEX drawer units on both sides with a tabletop on top. Is it purely for storage reasons?

I once tried a setup with one ALEX unit on one side and two regular legs on the other, but it didn’t feel very stable to me.

Now I’m considering something like the TROTTEN frame – the version with the fixed, non-adjustable legs that form a sort of triangle shape. It seems like it would be more solid, since the tabletop is properly mounted onto the frame instead of just resting on drawers.

Is there any reason people don’t go for frames like TROTTEN more often? Are there downsides I’m not seeing?
