What are the largest drawbacks/negatives with IKEA Alex drawers?
Why does everyone go for the typical “two ALEX drawers + tabletop” desk setup?
Are there specific inserts for the Alex drawers to organize things I put inside? I searched the Ikea site but couldn't find anything.
Too much weight on an Alex drawer or fine?

Looking to upgrade my storage system to include 2 of the wide Alex cabinets, but I have seen some complaints about the drawer extension wasting about 5". Any other major issues people have run into with them? Any drawer cabinets people like more than them? Any good ideas for how to utilize the "wasted space" (is it that big of a deal when you have removable trays)?
I’ve always wondered why so many setups use the ALEX drawer units on both sides with a tabletop on top. Is it purely for storage reasons?
I once tried a setup with one ALEX unit on one side and two regular legs on the other, but it didn’t feel very stable to me.
Now I’m considering something like the TROTTEN frame – the version with the fixed, non-adjustable legs that form a sort of triangle shape. It seems like it would be more solid, since the tabletop is properly mounted onto the frame instead of just resting on drawers.
Is there any reason people don’t go for frames like TROTTEN more often? Are there downsides I’m not seeing?
