Alex Filing Drawer Hack
Waited forever for the new Alex Drawers to come out. Was disappointed the blue grey version didn't come with a filing drawer option. Decided to make it myself. Took the bottom out of the fourth drawer down, and used a metal plate to hold the fronts together. Got two replace parts from ikea for the plastic pieces that slide over the drawer sides. They couldn't get the metal rod for some reason, which is fine, because it would have sat too high anyway. I wouldn't have been able to use tabs on my hanging file folders. There was probably a better way, but ended up using 1/8” rod and bent it so the files hang with enough room for tabs. Pretty happy with how it turned out (and how inexpensive it was to do). This confused me at first too. You're trying to put your files in wrong. You want to place the metal rods in the holes along the top of the drawer to allow for hanging your files. Like this: http://i.imgur.com/Ex0QkX3.jpg More on reddit.com

I had an extra chair mat. I arranged it so the ALEX was on the mat when the drawer was both open and closed - the back edge of the Alex was flush with one edge of the mat. That works just fine.

I feel so dumb but I'm having a hard time finding files that fit in the Alex filing cabinet I just got.
I got a standard letter size that was too big for the smallest arrangement of the poles and too small for the step up from that.
If you have an Alex unit, can you share the files you bought that fit? Links are very much appreciated. :] Thank you!

ps: I do know that the files are supposed to be arranged vertically and not horizontally.

So it should fit standard files if you put the back pole in the fourth from back hole and the front bar in the very first hole. If you put the back bar in third front back hole it’s for A4 files. If you put the back bar in second to back hole it’s for legal size file folders and all the way back is for A3 sized

Very confused here! I bought the Alex desk set and brought home some file folders from my office. The drawers are so narrow, standard letter manila folders don't even fit in there! An 8.5x11 sheet of paper will just barely fit.
What size folders are people using and where did you get them?
