I'm wondering if anyone has done this? I was surprised that you couldn't buy Ikea cabinets in a 21" depth for bathrooms. I don't really like the standalone vanities they offer and am looking for a regular box with doors under the sink and a bank of drawers beside it. The main issue is obviously the drawer slides - can they be purchased with shorter ones?

Local cabinet companies, I'm looking at like 2.5x the cost as Ikea so not too keen on that.

If you are not planning to use the rear brackets to support the cabinet on a rail or directly into the wall structure, you can certainly cut a 24" deep cabinet shorter to 21" but you'll need a table saw or track saw to cut a new slot for your back board. You could possibly use the cut off portion as a template to guide you. I would recommend that you support your cabinet from underneath on 4 euro-style adjustable feet attached to the bottom of the cabinet. Don't bother with the Ikea Sektion cabinet legs. Alternatively, you could look at the 14 3/4" shallow Sektion base cabinets, and stand them 7" away from the rear wall, but be sure to secure it directly to the floor or support them by attaching them directly to the wall. Unfortunately that may have some consequences for sink depth, and you will only be able to use the shallow Maximera drawers.

IKEA makes 15" deep maximera drawers for their sektion cabinets. I'm sure you'd be able to install a 15" drawer into a cut down 24" deep cabinet fine. Cutting down the cabinet is a whole other animal. If you cut 3"-ish off the back of the cabinet, you'd be cutting off a lot of the pre-drilled holes and stuff that is used to assemble the cabinet as well as the pre-drilled holes for the mounting brackets. It's possible, but should only be done if you're confident in your skills to hack the cabinet so it's able to be assembled after the cut.

Thinking of modifying a BESTÅ custom cabinet as an under sink storage for my ugly ass pedestal sink. Three questions comes to mind for this project:

Can I mount the cabinet without the back? To make it easier for the pedestal to pass through
How does it hold up with moisture and water? If it doesn’t hold up well, what products are recommended to make it AT LEAST water resistant?

The Besta system will not do well with moisture.

I can't imagine this is going to look well or last long. Is there a reason why you wouldn't just replace the pedestal with a vanity cabinet?

Has anyone had issues using the Sektion cabinets for a bathroom vanity? We have enough space to use standard depth. I'm thinking I'd use a sink cabinet for the sink and a drawer unit next to it so no fussing with drawers and plumbing.

They handle the wet-ish environment of a kitchen, no reason they wouldn't hold up in a bathroom. If you're going to use a 30" or 36" standard cabinet for the sink, and you're able to keep all of the plumbing in the back 1/3 of the cabinet, IKEA makes shallow drawers that can be installed in standard depth cabinets (all of the plumbing would be behind the drawers). You could do drawers on the bottom 2/3 of the cabinet and a dummy panel on the top 1/3 where the sink is.

You can always go for flat cabinet doors with push to open. Those look less like kitchen / laundry room. Theres also horizontal cabinets with vertical hinges,). The pic has SEKTION cabinets with ASKERSUND doors. The vertical hinges are UTRUSTA and the push to open mechanism is also UTRUSTA. Edit: you cant install cabinets/storage without drilling. Anything stick on cant bear much weight if any at all and eventually will end up falling on your head. *

With a proper tile drill, drilling shouldn’t break any tiles. I used METOD cabinets (mounted with the rails) in my laundry room with pretty fragile tiles and had no problems.
