January 14, 2023 - We put in an ikea kitchen a few months ago. I took all the measurements, messed around with their online planner and then went to St Catherines Ikea Design center to confirm everything with their planners and make the purchase. I had a pretty simple galley style kitchen with no island so it wasn't too difficult so we didnt go with the inhouse measurement from them.

congrats on being under budget, that's rare as hell lol. one thing though - if you ever do another reno and don't wanna deal with coordinating family/friends for labour, worth looking into Towns Construction. they do kitchen renos in calgary so different city but their whole thing is keeping projects on time and budget. anyway your two-tone setup sounds sick. I’m going to disagree with the comments about the sink not being centred on the window. I just did a kitchen remodel with IKEA cabinets- the brand that were in the kitchen before had weird 9” cabinets so it was hard to centre the sink. My solution was to add 3” pullouts by the side of the sink. In Canada the company that makes them is Richelieu, they are also available on Amazon and Wayfair. They aren’t cheap, I couldn’t find a plan online so I did some trial and error and built them myself. Worked great and I had the flexibility to do 4”. I have very basic skills and I made it work. As for the fridge- yes you need a filler piece or a gap on the sides. For my fridge I needed 2” on each side (double doors), but check your fridge or manufacturer guidelines. I did the plans online, had an in person appointment and then booked a second in person appointment. The first in person appointment was not great- she made some odd recommendations and seemed more concerned with getting a good review. The second in person appointment was great! She was much more proficient with the tool and identified errors the first person made. I know a few people who did the in home appointment and they had great experiences. The biggest advantage is the 1/4” differences in measurements can actually change if a cabinet fits or not. I was very comfortable with measuring, but the tool is not super easy to use and it gives errors when there isn’t actually an issue (like the 40” space). I strongly recommend doing the in person appointment if you can. If you are close enough to your IKEA, go in and talk to the people working there and if you find one who seems good ask if they do the appointments, or who they would recommend from the team to book with. I’m in the process of completely resigning my kitchen. The kitchen will be in a new space in the house so we are creating an entirely new floor plan. An architect helped me figure out the layout but I was hoping to work with an IKEA kitchen designer to create the look and layout as well as build an island. I’m worried I may be expecting too much from the ikea team and they may not be able to help me create the flow and functionality I am hoping for. Has anyone worked with the Ikea team to completely redesign your kitchen and what was your experience like?

Hey! ex-IKEA kitchen planner employee here. In the self serve planning studio, coworkers are simply there to assist you in planning, assist meaning showing you how the software works and perhaps give some advice, the design however is still dont by you. An in store kitchen planner, will design the kitchen for you to your specification. These coworkwers usually have been working there for a while and should be able to get the flow you are looking for.

I had a great IKEA kitchen designer who understood my budget and my wacky old kitchen (former porch in a 100+ year old house; was probably walled in in the 1940s). she and I talked a lot about what I cook/bake and she checked out the small appliances I use regularly, and did a great job building a fantastic kitchen for me. I also used Traemond for the installation which was helpful, bc the walls weren't square even after we ripped out old cabinets and re-sheetrocked. side note: I really recommend going with all drawers on the bottom cabinets--it's so much easier to find items in drawers than in deep cabinets.
