I'm finding this type of combo works well for me too—I'm not on a futon, rather a fully inflated air mattress with two toppers as comfort layers. I honestly think most modern beds are just too soft and unsupportive (and latex is painfully supportive, on me). I wonder if it has something to do with their ability to be roll-packed for shipping. Although Ikea mattresses do seem to be pretty mediocre, most arnt bad for the price. When looking at reviews you should expect there to be a lot of bad reviews though. Thats just the nature of mattress shopping, its a very individualized item and there is no such thing as a mattress that works for everyone. On ikea for example whenever they release a new mattress much of the reviews on it will be the people who immediately didnt like it and asked for a return. When you go onto a website and see mostly glowing reviews, what that usually means is they are not allowing negative reviews to post. Most manufacturer websites engage in review manipulation and its mostly just the big box retailers like Ikea and Costco who do not. Other major sites like Amazon have a similar issue, rather than negative reviews being removed much of the positive reviews are fake. It's not the prettiest, but Ikea's Lycksele Lovas is very comfortable. It pulls out as a single piece mattress, so no awkard seams/gaps like you get on the type that fold the back down, and there are enough flat slats that you don't feel them through the mattress as with a lot of other futons of this type. I used it as my bed for 2 summers and had no complaints. It is also very compact, though actually folds out to about the size of a full sized mattress (about 1 inch wider, 1 inch shorter, but full sized sheets work fine). More on reddit.com

If you want to continue have a large sleeping area, get one of the day beds with the 2 mattresses. Most of the daybeds come in 2 versions. The ones that come with one mattress are simply a twin size daybed with storage. However, the versions that some with 2 mattresses are a twin size daybed that can be opened out to almost a King size bed and pushed back in daybed mode when not sleeping. There is also drawer storage in the bed as well for bedding, clothes or whatever. The HEMNES is probably the best constructed of the daybeds, but there are a couple of other choices. As someone else noted, these daybeds are frequently available on Facebook Marketplace; but if you go that route, you should get new mattresses to avoid the possibility of bedbugs and various allergens. From what I’ve read in other posts, I would recommend a bunkie board as well. The main issue I’ve seen people post about (only occasionally) is breaking a bed slat when the bed is opened (they put their knee on the bed and it pushes into a gap between slats and breaks them). The other issue is not being able to sit on the daybed like you do a sofa with your legs touching the floor, but you could get large bolsters to place along the back of the daybed which would support your back when the bed is in daybed mode. They would also push your sitting stance up sufficiently to have your feet on the floor when sitting up. More on reddit.com
