Hemnes 3-Drawer Chest - Are the internal particleboard side panels necessary?
Hemnes 3-Drawer Chest (Nightstand) Top drawer defect
Is Ikea Hemnes white chest of 3 drawers discontinued?
I think there are at least 3 different ones that you can refer to. Do you have the product number so I'm on the same page as you :) Theres like a dresser type one and a night stand type one.
More on reddit.comJust curious if anyone knows why it’s hard to acquire one of these? I was trying to match it with the rest of my dressers, but unfortunately it seems like I’m unable to buy one in my area. Have they stopped making these?
(This is about UK Item 304.608.11)
I've just started putting one together -- just have the sides assembled so far. Steps 5 and 6 (p.13) would have me attach two very heavy particle-board panels on the inside of each side. (In the US instructions this is step 4, p.8)
It looks to me like they are just there to add support to the drawer rails, which otherwise are bridging over a gap between the two verticals (with about 1/2 inch space between the rails and the outer side panel). But the only thing holding these in place are wooden pegs into the outer side panels -- nothing attaches them to the uprights, and the drawer rails don't screw down to them.
So are they necessary? It seems to me that they're just going to add a lot of weight without adding much structural support. I've seen assembly videos and photos where these inner panels are left out -- and maybe they aren't even included in some countries or in earlier versions of the kit? If I leave them out, am I going to end up with a much less sturdy dresser, or will the drawer rails bend outwards over time?
Thanks for the advice.
We bought two of these, and both of them have issues with the top drawer being extremely difficult to open/close past 2 inches. I've switched out the slides with the other drawers that work perfectly, it appears to be a drawer issue. It isn't a screw catching, and it doesn't appear to be a warped slide (I've switched all slides and drawers in every combination to try to isolate the issue).
Based on reviews it looks like this is a trend. Any ideas on a fix? I ordered soft-close slides but there is not enough of a gap for them. We live hours away from an Ikea so returning it is not a great option.
