I did mine less than 6 months ago. Best decision ever. The kitchen is gorgeous. If you aren't relocating anything and just updating the cabinets, it's very straightforward. Since we were expanding the kitchen and updating plumbing and electrical work, I made sure to have those trades come by and consulted with them regarding my design before moving forward. I also had IKEA come by and measure. This was the most important and significant tool in designing and planning myself. It's well worth the $50. As for the layout itself, I went through multiple iterations and didn't rush it. You can pay someone to design the kitchen for you as well, though it won't be as custom then. When I had decided on the final design, I booked a planning meeting at IKEA. I also submitted it for their digital planning multiple times (it's free). So I got tons of feedback and it improved bit by bit every time. The in person planning meeting helped me avoid some mistakes though even then there's some things they didn't catch that we figured out after. We had a non-IKEA contractor install the cabinets (there's quite a few in the GTA, and they're cheaper than IKEA). The one we had was stellar -- if you Google, you'll find it's the one with the most five star reviews. IKEA delivery was seamless too and we had no issues. Everything was available for delivery within 2 days. The full kitchen (12 x 10) was installed in 4 days. You'll need to set aside time for demo, plumbing, electrical, appliances, backsplash, HVAC, and cleanup as well. From start to finish it took 6 months, most of that time in the design phase. Since I coordinated all the trades myself, and sourced all materials, I think we saved like $30,000 versus if we had gone through a general contractor and got wood cabinets with the same high end features (cabinets scribed to the ceiling, drawers at the bottom, soft close, etc.). FYI IKEA is still the cheapest but it's 1.5-2x more expensive than anyone who installed it pre-pandemic. More on reddit.com
